Average Treasure

My players just leveled, and in the game my players find 'a magic item' so players can decide in the group who gets what item in which order.

I know this is not the best solution for handling treasure but my players like it so i keep it.

But here is my question.. Is there a way to calculate the average wealth of a player and compare it to book standards for a lvl?

So let's say a lvl 3 player, in the book he should have a lvl 2 (520 gp), 3 (680 gp) and 4 (840 gp) item and some loose coins (680 gp) and some free base equipment if he starts at lvl 3.

So that is around 2740gp worth of stuff..

Can i compare that number against the wealth of items my players have? Offcourse it will be difficult cause players use, buy, sell stuff... but that would not be a real big problem i think..

Or am i wrong and need to do something completely else :P

At very low levels, a new PC starts with more gear than a party would expect to have. However the gear will not be quite as powerful as individual pieces of DMG wealth from treasure packets.

A five person 1st level party, for instance, gets enough GP to buy 2 level 1 items + a level 5 4 3 & 2 item. Realistically each party member will have a single item, and they'll have party gold equal to their level. The 'average' will be a single level 3 item.

A level 2 character starts with a level 3, 2 and 1 magic item and gold worth a level 1 magic item. Significantly more.

However, by level three the party now finds a 6 5 4 3 and gold worth two ones. So now every party member has a level 3 average AND a level 4 average. The new level 3 has a 4 3 2 and gold for a 2.

By level 4-5 a party with treasure wealth has a lot more (and a few better) items than a new party. The divide just continues to grow.

However the new PC baseline is enough money for almost every PC you could build (you can kinda screw yourself by needing a lot of weapons/implements, but not too baddly) to have a good baseline of gear. What actually matters is the 'big 3' weapon/impelement for attacks, neck for fort/ref/will and armor for AC. If your PCs have that they may lack options at higher levels, but the numbers play just fine.

So the only way to check if a party has enough wealth is to check what level they started, add all the parcels they should get till the lvl they are and compare at what they have..

Cause starting at a higher lvl has a big difference with wealth for persons who say start at lvl 1..?
