Awaken

Hi folks,
I''ve been trying to understand awakened animals better (using the Awaken spell). Most importantly, I've been trying to figure out skill points and feats for an awakened animal. A web search has turned up nothing...

Let's take an awakened wolf. Does it gain skill points for the 2 bonus hit dice handed it upon awakening? It becomes a magical beast, so does it gain dark vision and low-light vision? Does it change to having a BAB as a fighter?

Thanks,

My read is that the bonus hit dice are animal hit dice. After that, it is a magical beast, so does gain dark vision and low-light vision.

Any further advancement is treated separately, like multiclassing. So BAB is still like a (regular hit dice +2) animal.

I would say: Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes (as per Savage Species)

I've just started a brand-new Awakened Animal thread to finally put these kinds of issues to rest. I would love it if you could all drop by there and continue the discussion there!

Here's my take: By default, the awakened animal would gain the *traits* of the magical beast type (i.e. darkvision etc), but retain the *features* of it's original type (HD size, BAB and save progression). That spelled out under the "Augmented Subtype", and also under Templates.

I decided to write out "Awakened Animal" as an actual template, just to force me to be as explicit as possible about these things. Dissenting opinions are welcome, of course...
