i don't see what the point of a "Hunks of GenCon" gallery would be, anyway. i mean come on, the only picture in there would be mine. ;)

Some of the comments in this thread are like school on a Sunday - No Class! :p
[FAT ALBERT OFF]

Seriously though, props to Dragongirl for sticking up for what's right.

Now I think I'll get out of here before the mob gets ugly ;)

Peace!

I always had a suspicion....

Suddenly I feel like Sean K R is a dirty old man, wandering around the Con with his ogling digital camera....

....Sheesh, he's even got his girlfriend taking pics, too?!?

(Claudio, although she looks like she's maybe 12 at best, your wife is very pretty.)

I don't really see why the gallery or its title are objectionable. If someone took a picture of me and posted it in an online photo album called "Hunks of UK GenCon", I'd be flattered (I'd also suggest they had their eyes tested, but that's a different matter). If the gallery had been disparaging, I could understand the offence, but the gallery and its title are complimentary. What's the problem?
Some people (including me) don't find the term babe to be flattering. Why not call it Ladies of GenCon?

I'm not so sure I'm OK with this gallery. Anyone who paid attention would know that I found nothing offensive about the last cover of Dragon. This, on the other hand, is effectively turning a corner of ENWorld into the gamer's equivalent of the Swimsuit Issue.

Do I have to be the one to point out that many of the (IMO cuter) pictures taken are of women NOT in skimpy outfits.

That said, I could see why some would find the term babes demeaning. Perhaps "girls" or "women" would be more appropraite.

First off anyone willing to pose in a chainmail bikini...who i must point out fills it nicely, should by lessons learned in life that sometimes people will comment on the things they find most striking or captivating in the manner they know best. Additionally i doubt that these girls are stupid and have learned lifes lessons and expect comments and probably enjoy to some extent the attention. Not to mention that they knew they were drawing attention to themselves and that by being photographed that immature people and mature people alike will see these photo's and enjoy them immensily as i have, some people however are more expressive of what they see as "art" and like all art it should be commented on because it is a very sophisticated thing to do and one that must bring forth a reaction. 2 points Saphryme

I have to admit that, despite the paragraph above desperately needing some healthy editing, I'm totally 100% behind the general sentiments of Saphryme. C'mon--the girl in the chainmail bikini wasn't trying to get a TAN, fer chrissakes.

It's OK for people (male or female) to be exhibitionists if they wanna be, you know? Even if that goes against all politically correct social mores and seemingly promotes the objectification of certain genders.

*ahem*

Besides, I STILL think Claudio's wife is cute.

I call my wife "babe" regularly.

Babe by Styx

I Got You, Babe by Sonny and Cher

Since when is "babe" a derogatory or insulting term? It's not like he/they are using the other "B" word.

And like I pointed out, and others after me, they willingly wore the costumes and happily posed for the picture (read SKR's 'disclaimer' on his site).

Some folks are *trying* to find offense.

Would any male GenCon attendees be offended by:

"Hunks of GenCon"

"Dudes of GenCon"

"Guys of GenCon"

"Boys of GenCon"

I'd have to say I'm with DragonGirl on this one.

It would serve the community public better to be an album of not just "babes" but something the includes men as well. I for one would like to see pictures of the other interesting costumes walking around. I'm not too much interested in seeing pictures of normal women I don't know but seeing costumes is fun.

As for the argument of "look at the way they're dressed they should expect sexist comments"...that doesn't quite fly. They want attention, appreciation - what person wouldn't? but I don't think they'd be too thrilled to be referred to in those terms. Women (just like men) like to be appreciated for their looks, but not objectified - and terminology plays a large part in that.

As an extreme example, there's a big difference from being called "beautiful" to be called "a hot piece of ---". One is respectful and still shows appreciation, the other is just -- not appropriate for enworld.

As for the word "babe" being demeaning...its all about the context in which the way the word is used.

EDIT: oops was writing while Morrus posted :p pay no attention to the goof behind the monitor...
