Baby, you can drive my car

On the drive in to work this morning, I was watching the other cars and thinking about the funky little car culture that we have here in Charlottesville, VA. We have a huge number of hybrid gas/electric vehicles, lots of BMWs and Volvos, more MiniCoopers than I can count, and a huge number of tricked out import cars that are also used for racing. I work with a guy who runs one of the largest (possibly the largest) MR2 racing messageboards online. There are at least 3 customization clubs around town, probably more. It's a really weird mix of cars on the street.

So, whats the car culture like in your town? What do you drive? For the record, I've got a burgandy 2002 Mazda Protege.

That's a good question. We live in a snowy climate, so there are a fair number of SUVs as well as mini-vans. Compacts still own the roads, here, though. We also have a surprsing number of imports/tuners and even have "Sunday Night Cruising" in my city (of almost three-quarters of a million people) in which the main arteries are inundated with all these cars people store over the winter. Where do they all come from?

I drive a silver 2002 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8T.

The cars variety up here in the northeast is pretty mixed. There is definitely an import/tuner crowd as well as the SUV soccer moms who shouldn't be driving them. I see a lot of lemos too that probably couldn't pass inspection. There are certainly a lot of car dealerships around.

I'm probably not the best person to ask because my dad and my bro are into cars hardcore (I am too to a degree). My bro has a 92 Civic Si hatch and my dad's going through a Vette phase. I have a 95 Accord but I'm hoping to get something new in the spring. I almost bought a new Civic Si last fall but decided to tough out one winter with my current car. I'd love to get a WRX.

You call those cars small?

hahahaha

I drive a smart fortwo, the best car on the planet :)

I'm waiting for them to be allowed into the US, I'd love to take one for a testdrive. You can fit, what, one bag of groceries in there with you? And maybe a book? ;)

They wont. Smart fortwo is not accepted with the roadworthyness test.

And I have to admit it is too small for US roads.
But you are welcome to come over and give it a spin.

DC has quite the combination of cars - so few people are actually *from* the DC-metro area that you have a pretty vast variety of cars. So, not only do you have a mixture of SUVs and compact cars, you have plates from all over the United States. Very cool.

The_Universe and I drive a 2004 Ford Escape XLT and I love it!

Very, very few older cars on the street here; since everybody's on employee leases. Relatively smaller frequency of import cars as well. Fair amount of SUVs. Very little in the way of "tuner" cars.

I live in Detroit. None of that's really surprising I guess...

I have never owned a car.

Vancouver is land o' the SUV, mostly. Everyone wants everyone else to think they go to Whistler every weekend. Lotsa luxury cars, not as many old Beetles as you used to see around here.

Well, I drive a 99 Acura, but Texas has a _lot_ of trucks. Good number of SUVs too. They say everything's big here.
