Ok, so it's the spiritual successor of the previous D&D 3.5 and AD&D versions. It makes sense that they wouldn't put out a 5e book, then demand the players abandon the core pillars of 5e play.
There was no AD&D version of L5R's Rokugan. AD&D was effectively going out of print when L5R was written. (Assuming John's normal schedule, late 1994 or 1995, with publication in 1996.)

Those were the dark days for TSR.

I was referring to Oriental Adventures, in which the new 5e book shares a lot of campaign expectations with.
