Back from Origins!

Erik, you are MORE than welcome to hang out with Dextra and I next Con. Just have to tell us when you are able to free yourself of the Paizo booth. Between Dextra and I, we manage to spot lots of cool stuff. Throw in Crothian's combination of awesome memory and direction sense... ("hey, didn't I see something like..." - "yeah, two rows down")

That said, I just realized I haven't raved here about the pages you had on display from the Shackled City book. (I was raving about it on another forum and in a chat room). That book looks fantastic.

FANTASTIC.

What a way to break into the market with a book like that. Even though I have the Shackled City run from Dungeon, I'll be picking it up. And I'm already sold on your next hardcover release too. Looking forward to agreat year of Paizo!

Couple of things I'm curious about and maybe somebody can clue me in:

1) How long is Origins going to remain in Columbus?

From the main page of their site it looks like till at least 2010 and tentatively until 2013.

2) How was attendance this year? Were the vendors happy? The vendor area seemed busy.

They say they had 15,061 attendees which was 1000 higher than the previous year and is a new record. I can't say for sure whether the vendors were happy.

I mentioned the Shackled City hardcover in one of my Origins posts, but I just wanted to add it does look great. I am going from a wait and see approach to a will pick up attitude. Looking forward to this one.

I can't speak to that either, but I did wonder why the vendors were charging full retail price for books I can get on Amazon for 10-30% off. I realize they don't want to undercut the FLGSs, but it was still surprising.

Other notes:

* I wish I had seen that Testament was there and on sale. I would have gotten it.
* If I didn't say it before, the Shackled City preview looked sweet. This is going to be one fine book.
* A buddy of mine became an Anachronism junkie after playing the demo. He loves it. I played a game with him. It's going to replace Magic as our group's what-to-do-while-everyone-else-is-showing-up game.

After another great example of HH being on the "superduper"wavelenght gaming wise, I know that if it werent for other concerns I would be moving to the great white north.

PS HH I actually had not see your comments on gloom when I brought that up the other day :D

They always do that now it seems. Years ago I was able to get good deals at cons and that was one of the reasons to go, but these days there is little reason to goto cons just to pick books up as you will rarely find a deal. Even the discount booths this year were not that good.

I would certainly think sales would increase in the dealer hall if there were more deals to be found. I don't really like to pay full price for books and tend to have the will power to not buy unless I feel like I am getting some sort of deal. Now that's not to say folks have to slash their prices to Amazon prices (or other online outlets) to get me to buy, after all instant gratification is worth something, right? But start knocking 20% to 25% off of items or Buy One, Get One deals and the chances of me buying things at the Con go up.

This year I spent very little money in the dealer room. The things I did pick up were mainly items that may not be in the mainstream areas. I had money to spend, but just felt I could get better deals elsewhere. These same sentiments were echoed by a few of my other friends as they wandered the halls.

Well, you either believe your product is worth the price you print on it or you don't. If you discount everything, it sends a bad message to retailers. If you can't stand behind your own products and stick to MSRP, they want to know why they should. And that's a fair question.

That said, con specials are still fairly common. They are just usually limited to select items, not done across the board.

We've always said we've got friends in cool places. So when our buddy NAME DROPPING ALERT Jim Zubkavich (who did the illo work for ENP's Quick Shots: Alpha, former Camarilla Prince of Toronto, and now RPG BigWig at Udon (he and his fabulous partner did the the Exalted comic) gives us a hot tip, we check it out. And we have the advantage of hanging with Crothian, who was the submissions co-ordinator for the ENnies- so he's seen a lot of great stuff he could reccommend.

You're always welcome here in Canadia!
