Back to 1st Edition?

I've been thinking about inventing my own personal version of D&D using the Rules Cyclopedia as a foundation just recently, adopting monsters, spells and magic items from 1E and 2E AD&D and Hackmaster.

You know, as soon as I'd posted the original question I began thinking that the ideal mix of 1E with elements of 3E might well be the the version of OD&D that appeared in the Rules Cyclopaedia.

By the time the Rules Cyclopaedia made an appearance I had been playing AD&D for sometime but I picked it up for nostalgia reasons. The system described has as an awful lot going for it if you like a "rules light" game with class-based characters!

I play both 1E and 3E, but tend to keep the rules separate for purity's sake.
The exception to this is bringing 3E's clerical spontaneous casting down to 1E (it's the only way a cleric really gets an opportunity to stock any other kind of spell in their daily prayers). It's just a damn good idea!
But after reading the rest of the posts here, I am now thinking about importing the subdual rules as well...
