Back to 1st Edition?

3) The grappling and subdual rules. I find the 3E versions of these VASTLY superior to 1E.

But 1E had such a... unique unarmed system. It was such a nice break from the normal, comprehensible rules. :)

By vote on what could come over:

1) Subdual damage rules. (Rather than only being able to subdue dragons.)

2) Healing rates. Of course, in a game that doesn't scale well past 5th level, that's less of an issue.

hmm

I never thought about playing the original game using some some 3e rules. Very interesting.

The only ones I would probably take are:

-- The Clerical healing rule
-- The unarmed combat rules
-- The Skills

I would stay away from feats and the AC (lower vs. higher) rules.
Mainly to avoid doing work (i.e thinking on my part! ;)) and also the fear of unbalancing the game.

I wouldn't go back without the 3E multiclassing rules.

I would loosen up 1e rules but not allow the free for all that is 3e (If I played a1e game). I'd want to have 1e style Elf Fighter magic-users. Overall, I'd want something in between.

Oh, yeah. Totally forgot about that. That's the rule that, ultimately, made me decide that a class-based game could work well for character development.

Of course, you'd have to have XP based on character level rather than class level. _And_ you'd have to balance the classes. Sign me up for a 1-level dip into barbarian, UA style.

tongue in cheek

Well so far we have decided to import the spell system (If you do that you'll need to take the magic creation system with you), skills(might as well import the feat system too, they go hand in hand), BAB system and the AC system(if you do that you'll need to take the weapon and equipment list). The multiclass system. Subdual damage rules, healing rates....

Hmmmm. I see a pattern forming here. :D

No level limits, but keep existing multi-class and class restrictions, (no elven paladin/thief).

Skills...

"Maybe" the sorcerer as a character class.

Bonus spells for high "int" or "cha" (if I keep sorcerer).

Spontaneous healing spells for clerics, along with a healing spell at each level up to 5th.

I'd be inclined to rip some of 3E's less co-dependent mechanics (such as the above-mentioned multiclassing), the skill and weapon mastery rules from the oD&D Rules Encyclopedia, and a whole chunk of spells, monsters, races and classes from Hackmaster.

In fact, I've been thinking about inventing my own personal version of D&D using the Rules Cyclopedia as a foundation just recently, adopting monsters, spells and magic items from 1E and 2E AD&D and Hackmaster. At least it would be more compatible with my collection of Dungeon magazines.

the players.

other than that i find all the things i like about 3ed are already in my 1ed campaign.

so why don't you tell us what you've done, indeat of making flip comments about it?

Here are the rules I do use in my 1e game:

sorceror class
no race/class limits
sudual damage
more spells for spellcasting classes

I too, am considering selling off 3e in the back of my head. Sometimes the original is the best.
