Back to playing

Well, it wasn't a roleplay experience based on the Book of Erotic Fantasy :D, but it finally happened. Julie and I, had been putting off this game for a while. All sorts of things from RL got in the way. However, this afternoon, we sat down together and played through The Wizard's Amulet.

I had fun. It's good to be on the other side of the DM's Shield every once in a while.

I don't think I went overboard with the rules lawyering. Julie seemed to welcome my suggestions and my reminders during the game. She's not perfectly comfortable with all the rules governing combat (who is ?), but she seemed pleased when we reached the end.

For my part, I was playing a gnome Gestalt Sor/Clr1. After all the encounters, I was already at 2nd level. Sweet !

Julie is sitting behind me reading up on The Crucible of Freya. She plans on running it with a few modifications. I'll keep you guys up to date on how it went.

In many ways it will be a relief - you can focus on just your character and you don't have to worry about everything else that is going on. Think of it as a vacation.

Oh definitely, it's a vacation that I will enjoy. In a sense, I hope that Julie gets the bug of DMing. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy being the DM. I just hope that this vacation will be a little more long-term. That way we can alternate the job. Less stress for me ! ;)

Yes, alternating is the ultimate way to go - you get lots of time between sessions you run but still get to game every week (or every whatever period).

It is nice not to have to run all the time.

Let her find her feet with the rules as a DM her own way, and respect that it's not going to be the same way you run a game. The hardest thing, for me, after starting as a player after years of DMing was getting used to the fact that other DM's emphasised different rules and styles in their games. Offer help if you know the answer and you're asked, but otherwise bite you tongue and see where things are going.

Yep, I have had this problem when we switch and I become a player again. For usually the first session I become one of the most annoying rules-lawyers around. I've now recognized the pattern and I'm making an effort to stop.

Hi, I'm Ed and I'm a recovering DM.

"Hi Ed!"
