Bad Review vs. Good Reviews

A good review will explain the contents of a product and give an evaluation explaining the good and the bad of a product. The more useful description the better. Explaining why something is good or bad is very helpful to others contemplating purchasing the product.

You are doing a service to others in writing a quality review.

Well, I didn't want this thread to be a review itself. That would get it moved out of the General Discussion forum. I wanted an idea of what the general ENWorld populace thought of my situation.

Actually, I've already written a review of the product, but I've not posted it. The review is not inflamatory nor spiteful. I don't say "this sucks, don't buy it". But it is negative. So it sits on my HD until I make a decision on it.
Please post it!

That's the point of these reviews, after all! And since I've posted a few, I'd be interested to learn whether or not you agree or disagree with me.

FWIW, there are a few of the regular review sources that "just like" a particular publisher. So those reviews tend to be skewed a bit. Or perhaps they dislike the publisher or author in general, and so rate it poorly...it is, after all, all about preferences. There's always gonna be bias.

Do put your (non-inflamatory) review up. but first: tell us what it's on!

The suspense is killing me! :p

The problem I see with ENWorld reviews are:

1) 4 seems to be the average, instead of 3.

2) Different authors / publishers are rated by different standards. (Though the money spent on a product is green regardless whoever gets it.)

First is probably because people like to review products they like, and the reason for second point I don't know.

Re: an "average" of 4

I tend to research my buys pretty thouroughly, so I don't usually get real losers. But if I did, I'd post a review and call it as I see it.

Hey, looks like a decent review! Good job.

BTW, you rarely have to worry about copyright problems when quoting a source you are reviewing -- reviewing is one of the "fair use" conditions where you typically can quote sections of what you're reviewing in order to discuss the material.

I would really like to know what you think of it (the review). Is it proper? Useful?
IMO you've presented your argument for a low rating very well, and it is a very useful review. certainly there's nothing in the review i would call 'improper'.

Your review is excellent - fair, succinct and informative. Thank you for posting, and for taking the time to talk about it beforehand.

You hit on most of things that really irk me about Ultimate Feats, and it's clear that you put a lot of thought into your review. Nice work. :)

By the time I've bought a book, it has been out for a few months and there are usually several reviews already posted. Posting another from me at that point just seems redundant.

The more reviews there are for a given product, the better (as long as they're well thought-out, of course). Even if there are already numerous other reviews of the same product, and even if that product came out quite a while ago, a fresh review will nearly always add something worthwhile for me.

Edit: responded to the actual review.

It's a fair, reasonable review. You aren't inflammatory, you point out some good aspects of the book, but are clear what you don't like, and WHY you don't like it.

It confirms what I suspected about the 'Ultimate' line of books, and the $35 price tag certainly was a disincentive. I think it's actually a very good review, IMHO. I would trust your review over many other less objective reviewers that I've read. Kudos.
