I forgot a few really important things about the combat with Nightfang in Forge of Fury. Since low level PCs can't actually enter the water to fight her, it's going to be a battle of attrition. Nightfang is probably smart enough to know about clerics. Dragons of sufficient intelligence should by all means LOOK FOR HOLY SYMBOLS and kill off the cleric first in this type of encounter. After that, the arcane spellcasters (if the dragon has damage reduction, archers are slightly less dangerous than casters).

A while back I ran Forge of Fury for my group, and the encounter with Nightfang was my favorite part. That was the first dragon I had run in that campaign (PCs were 4th level, I think) and also the first one I'd run for that group. Most of the players are relatively new, and it was the first dragon EVER for a majority of them. I knew I had to make a good (bad?) impression.

BINGO, that's exactly the situation I'm going to be facing (soon?, naw ) with my party. The few (of 6) that have played DnD all played in 1e, so you could pretty-much consider them newbies for all intents and purposes. Thus my interest in this thread, I want that first fight to be truely something they will remember, even if those memorise surface as nightmares at the meare mention of the word: Dragon

I'd posted in another thread how they missed the ONE room in Sunless Citadel where the White Wyrmling was hiding Now I acutally miss that opportunity, could have instilled a false sense of over-confidence. This could have drastically increased the impact of Nightfang's upcoming fight. I'll probably post what happens when they get ther far, assuming I don't mess up SO bad I'd fear to embarass myself (more )

Wow...they're putting the old Wyrms of the North articles online, eh? That's great. I love those articles.

My favorite dragon is the female green....Clauglimyr? I can't remember if that's the right spelling or not. She had a lot of personality and an interesting motivation.
