IMC the abbot of the keep of vigilance in Everlund was corrupted by the power of orcus some time ago. And is now a blackguard. He has forsaken his god helm but puts up a false front of piety to keep control of the keep and make sure no one pays too much attention to the valley of the shrines (which I made sacred to helm). He largely uses dogma and past history to keep people from investigating the Burial halls (abysthor is an option in the camapign) and keep the clerics of the keep inactive in that respect. My plan is to have him in the background but using the helmites to interfere with the character's investigation of the valley. Eventually they should be able to track down his treachery, eventually leading to a clensing of the keep.

I figure he uses a powerful magic item to hide his evil aura, and delegates spell work to his underlings under the pretence that he is too busy with administrative duties to do the work himself.

Any suggestions for an abjuration magic item that would change his aura from evil to good?

Thanks,

Aaron.

Give him a Ring of Mind Shielding or Amulet of Undetectable Alignment. They should make his alignment unreadable. Actually changing the alignment would require another type of magic item, which you could just make up.

Maybe he imprisons somewhere a person with a pure soul (story hook, obviously :) ) and uses an item that creates a misdirection effect to redirect these spells on the pure soul.

He could also simply forbid to use alignment detection spells in his county, since they enter the privacy of people, and everyone should be judged on action, not on thoughts.

Oh, man - I know I've seen a magic item in one of my d20 books that does that. If I recall correctly, it imprints a target creature's alignment, and then presents that alignment as the user's when detections and whatnot are used. I wouldn't swear by it, but for some reason I want to say it was in a Scarred Lands book. I'll see if I can find it tonight.

Excellent. The best ideas are always so obvious after they're pointed out.

Just make one up. If there isn't already an item that allows you to emulate a certain alignment, there should be.

Odd I have been looking and in the Core rules at least, there is no spell that allows you to alter ones alignment aura. I am checking the FR sources, MotP, and BoVD now.

It does occur to me that for the purposes of detection of the magic item it needs a second abjuration effect that is more common. So that way, when someone detects magic on the item (I am thinking ring or some other kind of jewelry) they say oh its just his amulet of protection.
