Barbaians w/o raging... more of a savage fighter

I was wondering about having a barbarian that cannot rage, but gains bonus feats when ever he gains the ability to rage again.

He would be identical to the barabarian except.
1st: Gain a fighter bonus feat.
4th: Gain a fighter bonus feat
8th: Gain a fighter bonus feat
12th: Gain a fighter bonus feat
16th: Gain a fighter bonus feat
20th: Gain a fighter bonuis feat

What do you think

In all honesty, it looks a bit 'fighter-ish' for my liking. Quite like a multiclassed fighter-barbarian, in the end.

Personally, I would probably look toward finding a different set of abilities with which to replace Rage et al.

A particularly easy way would be to make a customised feat list, then go with your original plan using that (instead of the FBF list). Some feats/abilities from Masters of the Wild, Sword & Fist, Complete Warrior, Complete Adventurer, 3rd-party publishers' stuff and Dragon magazines might be appropriate.

A better way to start (IMO) might be to decide what you imagine Barbarians can and can't do, preferably without thinking about game mechanics, and go from there. It's how I modify and create classes these days, when I do at all.

As a last tangential thought though, I can see something vaguely *like* this variant being a viable class for 'Drenai d20' (some of Gemmell's worlds converted, as per the recent thread in the General RPG forum)... which reminds me: I wonder if that'll happen at all...

Anyway, good luck with it.

mmm...... Will look into it. Thanks, I prolly wouldn't have come with it on my own. You are right though. It is quite a bit too fighter ish. Perhaps a style the way they did the ranger.

Thanks

How about this. I have four styles of the wild arrior.
Code:
Mounted combatant
 1| Mounted Combat
5| Ride By Attack or Mounted Archery
10| Spirited Charge or Precise Shot
16| Trample or Rapid Shot
may need changes bcz prescise shot is a must for any archer.

Code:
Brute Forces
 1| Power Attack
 5| Cleave
10| Great Cleave
16| Whirlwind Attack

Code:
Guerilla Archer
 1| Point Blank Shot
 5| Run
10| Shot on the run
16| Rapid Shot

Code:
Wild Scout
 1| Run
 5| Endurance
10| Acrobatic
16| Die Hard

Is this feat prograssion far to small to make up for the characters loss of the rage ability?

a different direction

how about combining Spring Attack with Whirlwind Attack to allow a Barbarian to get off an attack against everything in a straight line . . . it fits the idea of a handfull of barbarians slaughtering an army.
