Bard's Gate...thoughts?

I was thinking of picking up Bard's Gate.

Any thoughts on it?
Is it worth it?

Good maps? Color maps? There hasn't been much in the way of free previews.

I realized that Ptolus is simply too much information for me (and cost). I need something a bit more manageable, and something generic enough that I could drop it in any setting (Forgotten Realms, Scarred Lands, Dungeon Crawl Classics setting, etc.).

It's a very traditional city. Very portable; very easy to plop into most campaign settings. It's very detailed, and very well done.

I just wrote a review of it, actually.

As a city, I like it a lot. I think the layout of the book could have used a lot more work from a useability standpoint - I really hate it when there is a big NPC Appendix and the main part just says "See NPC Appendix", no page, not even a chapter. And the chapters in the appendix are in a different order from the descriptions.

If you buy it and the additional free pdf's still are not available on the Necromancer Website, website, not the messageboards (just being clear), let me know.

Its good, some of Case's humor will probably make you laugh. There are a lot of neat little things "hidden" in the book, meant to be humorous, or just a homage to certain people/groups.

I liked it. The PDF extra add the extra oohumph for me, especially the revised NPC stats, plus the maps. The book itself is very useable and certainly while it's not full color, the map IS a fold out map, which is a large plus for me.

Bard's Gate is a really nice, portable city. It wasn't a chore to read through the book, and a lot of city books can be a chore for me to get through. The books and map are black and white, and the art and cartography is great. I think it's probably my favorite city book out of the ones I own.

The free supplement PDF's are really great, too. You can check them out on the Necromancer Games page here: http://www.necromancergames.com/prod_support.html

IMO, it's a great product for your money, you really can't go wrong.

D'oh! Why was all that stuff cut from the book? That's some stuff I really thought was missing in the book. They could have shrunk the margins or something (there is a fair amount of whitespace in the book).

I guess it's nice they make them available in PDF form, that PDFs are basically useless to me, not having a printer or a laptop...
