The homebrew campaign manager website Tabletop Mirror announced they have acquired the play-by-chat service Role Gate. In a statement reported by ICv2, Tabletop Mirror creator Varun Singh said “In our vision, we believe we can use the powerful functions of TTM to give Role Gate the love it deserves. In time, we’ll not only preserve and protect the functionalities of Role Gate, but we’ll bring even more new features to level up your experience."

Tabletop Mirror is a homebrew campaign manager that allows gamemasters to create custom SRD-style rulesets for their campaigns to share with their players using plug-and-play options from existing open licensed content or adding your own custom content. The website also features lore management, custom timekeeping, map making, and other campaign management tools.

Role Gate is a chat platform designed for play-by-post style roleplay with integrated options for many rules systems including Dungeons & Dragons, an interface to separate in-character and out-of-character chat, character sheets, and other tools for asynchronous roleplaying.

Tabletop Mirror provided more information about the future of both platforms on their update announcing the acquisition:

What Does this Mean for Us?

Now this is obviously a huge effect. This now means, by technicality, Tabletop Mirror's community is growing by at least 10x. That's pretty big and it's part of why Update #10: More Help! was necessary.

But, if you're reading this, you're probably either a Tabletop Mirror user or a Role Gate user. So I'm going to address what this means for both groups.

TTM Users

For Tabletop Mirror users, this means:
  • Play By Post is becoming a definite on our road map -- we're probably going to need to spend part of either October or November (about 1-2 weekly updates) focused on supporting the play-by-post functionalities that Role Gate supports
  • Our Commercialization plans will probably be tweaked a bit. The net effect will be nothing for folks who don't do play-by-post, but we need to make sure things are reasonable for everyone else.
  • Otherwise, nothing. We're still aiming for the same goals; we're just extending our help to our fellow gamers over at Role Gate now.
Overall, it's important to know that Tabletop Mirror ALREADY can do most of what Role Gate does -- and more. In a way, play-by-post is very much like the VTT functionalities we already support, just over a longer period of time. So from a tech perspective, it's not a huge endeavor to add play-by-post. It's mostly recycling existing functionalities in a new light.

Role Gate Users

I know, overall, there's going to be a lot of concern and questions. But I promise to you, as well as to Ryan, that I will do my best to do right by you all. Thank you for your trust.

To start, I'm going to tell you our plans for the future of Role Gate:
  • Role Gate's app will continue to operate, now with bug fixes and more dedicated efforts on improvement through the rest of this year
  • Eventually, we'll move all of Role Gate's data into Tabletop Mirror (once we're ready with all the functionalities you love + extras), allowing you to play as you always have via Tabletop Mirror
  • Finally, the end outcome is that the tech powering Role Gate will become the same as the tech that powers Tabletop Mirror. And with it, you'll get all of our features in your games. In other words, you'll be able to have:
    • Integrated system support for any system (even custom systems and homebrew)
    • Desktop access to your games + Cross-Platform play
    • New quality of life features like auto-archival of old games
    • Integrated Worldbuilding Tools
    • And more...
Here's some things that we can also promise you:
  • Tabletop Mirror doesn't have and never will have paywalled features. Everything you can do on the site today, you will be able to do WITHOUT PAYING A DIME.
  • Your Role Gate subscriptions will be mostly transferred over later this year, but you can always adjust. TTM's planned subscriptions tiers are pretty cheap (according to our community), and I can't imagine really anyone needing more than a $40/year membership AT MOST. 99%+ will not need any subscription at all.
  • We also have an upcoming Backerkit Campaign which will also offer LIFETIME subscriptions. Follow it so you don't miss out!
  • We, here at TTM, heavily prioritize communication and transparency. I host a lot of opportunities to get in touch with me -- and I'm extremely active on our Discord (like typically < 10 min reply time); if you DM me, I'm even faster to reply. You can always ask me anything.
And that's about it for now. You'll hear more very soon about ways to connect with me as we take over Role Gate's systems and roadmaps, but for now, nothing's changing. So keep on enjoying Role Gate as you do, now with more support from the dev team! Otherwise, stay tuned.

If you want to get started and try out what TTM can do, go ahead. Making an account is free! Just make an account and mess around. We have guides available too, that we're working on fleshing out even more.

What's Coming Up?

In the future, there's going to be more one-off/special-edition Fireside Chats to answer the needs of Role Gate's users, as well as Reddit AMAs and Q&As. So expect to hear more about that very soon.

Otherwise, there's a TON of things going on right now.
  • If you haven't, follow our Backerkit; we send special and exclusive updates to followers only!
  • Our Backerkit launches on August 6th! We'll have lifetime subscriptions and more available, as well as special early-bird bonuses that are PRETTY SPECIAL (literally never heard of anyone else doing what we're doing).
  • We have more partnerships with creators you love coming up soon, so keep an eye out for that as well!
  • GenCon is coming! And we're going! Hope to see some of you there. You'll hear more from us soon!
That's it for now. The future is pretty exciting. See you next time! :)

Tabletop Mirror currently has a Backerkit project prelaunch page active for an upcoming funding campaign launching in early August.
