So... for my benifit. We are talking about someone who is a 1st sorcerer/5th druid/xth shifter right?

And this guy who has a owl familiar wishes to greater-shapechange both himself and the owl into some form. ie a troll... Good luck keeping that bird sane after that little stunt. How are you going to justify a 2 INT avain creature controlling a big troll body? That trick is a tad better then "sit" or "fetch".

Except that we're not talking about a normal bird here. Its a magical beast with at least a 6 in intelligence and one that's been infused with a portion of its master's consciousness.

I'd say its a pretty effective combination except for the fact that your familiar still has only half your hitpoints, and turning it into something that could pose a serious threat to a powerful creature is likely to result in a dead familiar and a significant exp loss.
 

By core rules it won't work unless you and your familiar stay within 5' of each other at all times.

And your familiar still only has 1/2 your hit points.

In general I think it's a sub-par combination from a cost/benefit point of view.
