mettle with poor fort saves stands out as odd

Actually, I noted it down wrong - mettle (at least for the Hexblade version, which I'm using) is both Fort and Will save effects.

good will saves without spellcasting stands out as odd (or monks disciplined mind)

I'm thinking of dropping Sudden Strike for ranger-progression spellcasting...

This might sound a little off but have you considered the Bard.
