Go White Sox!!!

I'm hoping Red Sox Win out, and Indians win out, so the Yankees are on the outside looking in.

heck yeah! the yanks have enough championships... let's see someone else get one for a change. ;)

Yep, with a tear in my eye.
I've been a Yanks fan since the early 80's (when they stunk) and the great teams of the late 90's were fun to watch because of the team play and the guts. This team is just different. I had similar feelings at the start of the year, especially with all the new starting pitchers but the new faces that have risen from the ashes make the Yanks much easier to route for.

Chacon, Cano, Wang and Small are great stories. If Giambi makes the out at home last night the talk of today may have been about the Yankee rookie pitching through nerves to put in 7 solid innings rather than the game basically ending right there.

Honestly, the feel-good team of this year are the Indians. I will be cheering for them to lose this weekend, especially if the Yanks tank but if they aren't playing the Yanks I'll be watching to see if they can continue to pump out wins. They do look really tired, tho. As for the NL, I'm on the Houston train as I was last year. Hard not to route for 2 ex-Yanks in Pettite and Rocket.

Quick recap for the weekend's events -

If the Indians lose one of the next two and the Yanks win one, the Yanks win the division (better head-to-head record against Boston) and Boston gets the Wild Card with Cleveland left out. On the flip side, Boston is in with a win today and a Cleveland loss.

If either NY or Boston win out, they take the division.
- If the Indians win one more in this situation they get a playoff game for the WC.
- If the Indians win out in this situation they get the WC.

If NY & Boston split the last 2 and Cleveland wins out we get the 3-way tie and the universe implodes. This would force a playoff game at Yankee stadium for the the division with the loser having to play another playoff game the next day against Cleveland for the WC.

Enjoy.

I'm confused. The Yanks winning today put them 1 up on the Red Sox with one game left. Why can't the Sox win and force a playoff game?

Because the Yanks have a better head-to-head record vs Boston and Boston winning Sunday will still put them in the playoffs as the Wild Card. If Cleveland had won 2 straight and their record was equal or better than both/either NY/BOS it would have meant that one of the teams would miss the playoffs - hence forcing a 1GM playoff for the division then another game for the loser of the first game for the WC. But they didn't and now Boston holds destiny in it's own hands: win they are in and Cleveland goes home. By winning one game and the Indians winning none so far Boston clinched no less than at playoff at home vs. Cleveland for the WC.

In short, winning the Eastern Division became less important as far as making the playoffs went when Cleveland didn't win any games. Boston, if they win Sunday will be one game up on Cleveland if they both win which gives them the WC (same will happen with an Indian's loss). Cleveland is now praying for help from NY to force that play-in game on Monday but they still have to win themselves.

1-game play-in games are only played when the playoffs are on the line. That is not the case anymore in the Eastern Division.

So John, are you one of the CT residents who's confused as to whether they are supposed to root for Boston teams or New York teams?
No way. I bleed Pinstripes and Giant Blue. I live about 90 minutes from Yankee Stadium. Fenway is about 2.5 hours from me. Northern CT has more Boston fans and southern CT gears a little more towards NY Yanks/Mets.

If Boston lost 162 games a year it wouldn't be enough. :] I should also mention that after last year's win I am firmly anti-Patriot now, too.
