Basic Class Mechanic Question

Sigurd

First Post
Say I have a wizard level 1 who takes a prestige class 'zot'.

One element of the prestige class says "gains new spells per day as if she had also gained a level in wizard" and "essentially adds level of zot to level of wizard for determining spells per day and caster level."

If the class is finished after 3 levels where does the wizard go back to the class progression in wizard class?

Where he/she left + caster level?

or

Where he/she left?

What do I line up Caster level or earned level?

When you Wizard 1 takes a level in Zot (total Wiz 1 / Zot 1), he or she is treated as a Wizard 2 when preparing and casting spells.

When your Wizard 1 / Zot 1 then takes a level in Wizard (total Wiz 2 / Zot 1), he or she is treated as a Wizard 3 when preparing and casting spells.

Preparing and casting spells is not really what I'm asking about. Where do I continue planning my character on the Wizard class progression.

Wizard1/zot2 makes him cast as a 3rd level wizard. Do I draw his particular (wizard 2 from the 4th entry in the Wizard class (with the right spell descriptions) or do I go back to level 2 where I left.

Or do I have to throw out the tables now.

It makes a difference for feats and for resistance bonuses.

Sigurd, I would have answered as Patryn. I don't think your question is at all clear. Patryn answered with respect to spell progression, so are you asking now with respect to base attack bonus and base saving throws? Feats are character level based, not class-based, unless you are talking about the wizard bonus feats. A character resistance bonus to saves has nothing at all to do with the class level either, unless 'zot' grants such a bonus.

You do not add the levels together for anything except spells per day (and spells known where appropriate).

So for example, a Wizard2/Zot2 who takes another level in wizard does not get the wizard bonus feat (he's only a wizard3). Also his familiar only gets 3rd-level abilities, etc.

Just like any other multiclass, you take each level of each class separately, and then add them together.

So, you have the BAB, saving throws, skills, and feats of a level 2 wizard added to the BAB, saving throws, skills, and feats of a level 2 Zot.

And, when it comes to preparing and casting spells, you act like a Wizard 4.

Does that help more?

Yes, thank you all. Thats much more clear.

So I basically have to consult the wizard tables twice:

1) determine the spells & spells per day according to the combined level of wizard/zot

2) find the character ability mods based on class without levels of zot. They will be from different lines on the table. I then add those mods to the final total from zot to get the character bonuses.

Sorry if I'm not being clear.
