Did you start playing RPGs because of Basic D&D or a basic RPG?

Right. The Basic D&D as a board game approch may make it a little easier to learn, but also defeats the whole purpose. Kids get into it not becuase its another board game, but becuase it is better then a board game.
QFT. I started with the red box (Larry Elmore cover art) which says right there on the box cover "This game requires no gameboard because the action takes place in the player's imagination," and that's the way it should be.

Heck yeah.

1982... the "Gateway to Adventure" display in Kaybee toys caught my eye. My mom got me the Moldvay Purple Box for my 8th birthday and it's been a long, strange trip since then.

Ditto here. Although I don't own the older versions (Holmes, etc), I own every edition from Moldvay-on, and I think that Moldvay basic (and Moldvay/Cook expert) is still the most compulsively readable and playable out of the box version of the game ever written.

I don't usually get into nostalgia gaming, but I sure enjoy nostalgia reading... Is any of this stuff in PDF at, say, DriveThruRPG.com? I guess I should check...

My first session was with Holmes, but my friend and I found an AD&D group shortly, thereafter.

My actual introduction to the game, however, was via the brown books about a year or two before seeing the Holmes edition. The older kids were starting a game and I got called to dinner during character generation. We moved a week or two later.
