Basic D&D rides again!

Just a quick observation -- with the advent of styles, uniquely colored text isn't such a hot idea anymore. Stealth mode makes Ranes' post almost impossible to read.

I came to D&D when I was 14 and borrowed the brand new AD&D PHB (first edition, first printing in fact, but I digress). The only two friends at school who played lived too far away for me to get involved in their game on a regular basis. Within a few months, I was going to the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology D&D Society every Tuesday night, to get my gaming education.

I'll grant you, my parents would not have allowed me to venture so far from home (a bus and a train ride away), so late at night, had I been ten years old. I doubt the UMIST crowd would have wanted to babysit me either.

But a few years later, I was selling D&D. I sold thousands of copies of the different sets and modules and expansions and I regularly saved people from buying products they didn't understand were for a set they didn't have. Others were less lucky. Even now, on Ebay, you see people auctioning a lot that consists of a basic set rule book, half a dozen AD&D modules and a sales pitch that claims this is all you'd need to get started.

I won't forget the middle-aged American who came into the store one day and told me how young new players were now and that, "They're winning!"

I don't pretend that the game as it stands might not be intimidating to ten year olds. I just don't think that's a bad thing.

And hey, thanks for listening to what I really think.:)

BTW, sorry about the stealth mode thing. Dunno how that happened.

Loved OD&D. To me, 3.5 is the closest AD&D has been to it.

OD&D (revised) as my guess won't have to worry about the complicated issues of skills, opposed rolls of any sort, feats, and spells would get simplified. Perhaps we are already running close to OD&D now, but we just don't know it...

Interesting how the Basic set will be released at nearly the same time as Troll Lord's Castles and Crusades...

Purely coincidence, I'd say. There is a huge lead time on these products, and D&D Basic has been hinted at for a while now.

Cheers!

Personally, I love the Basic D&D set!!!

Nearly every year we run a mini-BD&D campaign. That's right Ranes! We put away our 3/3.5e books and dust off the old books (may the box rest in peace) and play through some of the old Basic modules. And I tell ya, without that 3e baggage, the game goes quick. Loads of fun. I think everyone should drag out their old box sets and run a little mini Basic game one-shot for the hell of it.

Actually, BAM, there you go: I predict the new BASIC D&D will simply be the Miniatures Skirmish game rules packaged with monster figures as well as PC figures, treasure and level tables (and a guide on how to modify the mini's stats), a slim "DM's guide", and an adventure.

That would be my bet, too. Basically, something like the old box set WotC put out, but with minis, too. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a miniature or two that was only available in the Basic Set (thus encouraging the "IT MUST BE MINE!" mini collectors to buy the Basic Set).
