Regarding building a race/class (like in savage species.

What is the base stats that are started with?

10,10,10,10,10,10

Or?

For instance, and Astral Deva has the following end stats:


Str 22, Dex 18, Con 18, Int 18, Wis 18, Cha 20

So through its levelling, it would get +12 STR, +8 DEX, +8 Con, +8 Int, +8 Wis, +10 Cha...if using all 10's....

or is the starting array something else? Is there an actual rule in the books that specify this?

Well, since Lycanthropy has been a topic of late, I'll refer to that section of the book.

The rules give a way to design your own Lycanthrope template, so if you wanted to be a Were Badger, it tells you how.

To get stat bonuses it says to look at the actual creature in the MM, adjust Strength and Dex for size variations, then subtract 10 or 11 from each. What's left, positive or negative, is the stat adjustment for the Lycanthropic version.

So the answer is probably that the base abilities are: 10, 11, 10, 11, 10, 11 (not necessarily in that order).

Note that this also says that there are racial adjustments, so the huge stat bonuses for creatures like the Astra Dava (sic) aren't necessarily tied to level advancement. More likely they're racial modifiers.

Some, however, with the Astral Deva (looking at savage species) it assumes 10 in all stats....

Hmm, and some are all 10's, some are half 10s half 11s.
