Bastard Sword, am I reading this correctly?

Uhm... about the wizard with MWP: BS instead of EWP: BS - that was not really to be taken seriously! ;)

I personally like the bastard sword, tho. I absolutely agree on the usefulness of shields, if you are going to have a high AC, those extra points can make a huge difference, and with a buckler you can even switch between one-handed and two-handed use as you see fit.

I stand by my saying that a shield is worthwhile. +7 to AC and an additional +9 worth of defensive enchantments can save your life. Sure, doing more damage means that you'll kill your foes faster, but there are always more foes, and only one you.

+7 to AC is nothing to sneer at, of course. I was just saying that with the possibility of animating shields having one and wielding a two-handed sword aren't mutually exclusive.

I guess its just a matter of play style.

Of course. At some point the AC just becomes sub-optimal to increase. Considering that a displacement cloak (50 kgp) gives you infinite AC 50% of time, how much resources should you spend to get very high ac's? Sacrifice that extra damage for a +7 to AC?

Anyhoo, IMC characters have never had trouble with too low ac's though they never use shields, although we play with a little less than the standard treasure amounts.

Exactly! Too good to cost nothing :) a feat it a fair price... and isn't it basically the same as the Dwarven Waraxe?

Or the wizard could take one level in the fighter class, and can use either greatsword or bastard sword as a two-handed weapon.

And always be short a level of his spell casting class, having 1 less than he could to caster level checks and SPD

True, if 20th character level is the maximum in one's campaign. You'll end up only being a 19th-level spellcaster, but at least you can bring greatsword into the melee should you run out of spells and magic items. And a likelier chance of having a much better hit points than a 20th-level single-classed wizards.

It's a trade-off for trying to make a militant wizard.
