Bastion in Black and White?

I have noticed different behavior

I have noticed that customers tend to impulse buy a lot more, if the product is under $20. I know that Bastion makes some terrific books, but even I have a hard time justifying the costs for some of teh books. I know that I can sell a lot more books, at $15, than I can at $20, and even fewer at $25, but I do not know if many other gaming stores help to push product, or just sell whatever is brought to the counter.

Well, in my own case, the price is the only reason I don't own any Bastion products.

It's hard to justify spending $25 on a little book, when I can spend $5-10 more and get a big book of something.

For instance, I was really interested in Alchemy & Herbalists. But I got Occult Lore from Atlas Instead. It's $5 more, hardback, 2.5 times the page count, and has sections on alchemy and herbalism.

On the other hand, I am going to buy Faeries in the near future (probably this week). It's still expensive, but $28 for 128 pages is easier to take than $25 for 96 pages.

Actually, Amazon is already selling the newer Bastion titles (Airships or Faeries) for less than $ 20, and that's with colour.

On the other hand, I won't miss the colour if it's really got to be black and white. I printed my pdf of Minions: Rebirth with my black and white laser printer, and to my surprise, it looked better than the original (at least to my eyes ;)).

This is extremely disappointing news to me.

I have come to *really* appreciate the color in Bastion's products. I wish more companies would print in color. The color always seems to add a "deluxe" component to Bastion's products, which is sorely lacking in the d20 market.

That said, however, since I do believe that Bastion is putting out some of the best stuff amongst d20 companies, I certainly can appreciate the business decision to print some items in B&W. After all, I *do* want Bastion to be around a long time.

Jim Butler - If you can (and are willing to) answer, have you decided on a formula as to what types of books to print B&W and which to do in color, or will it be taken on a case-by-case basis?

I am really enjoying the Oathbound setting, and hope that large sourcebooks for that world would stay in color.

Thanks.

As one of the freelancers who has done a lot of design work for Bastion Press over the past year, I have to say that the move to B&W surprised me at first, but the more I thought about it the less I cared. Through the years of gaming I have accumulated books from a number of publishers, some of which are B&W and others are color. Generally it makes little to no difference to me how colorful the product is. In fact, I think B&W is very appealing when the art is nice clean. The only time I really miss color is when B&W monster books come out.

At any rate, I trust that Jim is making the right decision. Profitability is the only way to continue providing quality gaming material to the public.

One interesting thing that comes to mind is that I believe that the products were originaly done in color to show that it could be done because at WoTC, it was something that wasn't done.

Or am I remembering things incorrectly here?

Glad that Oathbound and others came out in full color and enjoying them still.

As much as I'm not happy about this, I may eventually be able to cope as long as a few things are still in color. Specifically, will future Oathbound books at least still be color? PLEASE? I want all of my volumes to match. Also, could you please seriously consider keeping the slick paper. If I can't have color in my Bastion books, I'd at least like to have glossy paper. Finally, will this affect already solicited books like Into the Green or Critical Hits?

Thanks
Chris

"Into the Green", and "Torn Asunder" will be the first b/w books. It is not a bad thing due to the key fact that the written product remains a quality piece, I would use Arms and Armor if it was blue and white, it works as a quality product. That is what you need to remember, in order to keep going we have to find ways to get money down the pipe to the company (which is teh first to pay, and the last to receive).

So how much are they going to be? I've liked what I've gotten of Bastion's stuff, but not so much that I've been able to overcome the sticker shock. If the price goes down by $5, though . . .
