Assuming the marked enemy is 2 squares away from you, the Fighter's combat challenge wouldn't trigger at all, because it only triggers when an enemy adjacent to you makes an attack against you. Not that it matters, because the Fighter probably took the CC when the enemy shifted away in the first place.

Or:

. . .      A is your ally being attacked
. E A      E is the enemy attacking the ally
. F .      F is the fighter who can shift and make his attack

You like combat advantage because you're smart. If you are adjacent to an enemy, and he attacks your ally, the only two situations where this path feature won't give you combat advantage are:

A- The ally is on the same row/column as you, on the same side of the monster

B- Another monster is in the way.
