Battlemats

During our last convention in New Orleans we gave away 2' by 2' battlemats to all game masters for their effort in running RPGA rounds. If they did not have a mat we gave it to them before the convention so they could use it. Combat is so complicated now that to truely be fair you need to use a mat.

 Cool! when are you guys coming to L.A.?

Lazy and overpaid huh? Well dictate the responsibility to someone else in the group. I don't know about ordering one. I just made one yesterday. Our original board was a piece of plexi-glass with permanent marker squares gridded on. The problem was we couldn't tell the dm's marks from the grid being both black and all. The knew on is plexi-glass again but I used a model marker and made a white grid. It only took about 1/2 an hour and I spent under twenty bucks so....Have the creative one in your group do that. Good luck on finding one online though.

I have always just used the grid on a battlemap as a reference of distance and nothing more. That way you don't have to get out a string or ruler every time you move, the players don't try to go 35 feet on you. Although I have one that seems to always eek out a extra foot or two. Anyway, I always have been able to just draw a radius for a fireball and use comon sense for spacing among other things without causing a problem. Of course I have been playing that way from the begining.

well, i took the plunge. it should arrive tomorrow or the next day, and we're playing on tuesday so i'll let you all know how it went...

In our group we use a chess board, with squares of about 3X3 cm. We find this convenient because it is very sloppy. We find very tight miniature rules for dnd somewhat constraining.
