Okay, I've played a bit of Doom 3 and I just got to Ravenholm on Half Life 2 last night. I had heard a bunch of the hype about how creepy Ravenholm is and how it'll creep the heck out of you better than Doom 3. What utter drek! So far I've seen nothing in Ravenholm to creep me out like Doom 3. Yeah there are a bunch of headcrabs and headcrab zombies but personally I think the Trites (spider creatures) in D3 get the creep of the year award. Also in D3 the entire game is creepy where so far Ravenholm is the only creepy level so far in HL2. The gravity gun actually makes Ravenholm fun since you can run around throwing sawblades and explosive cans at the zombies. In D3 you can't even use your flashlight at the same time as a weapon (unless you are cheating with the duct tape mod).

Anyway, which FPS game do you think has the best creep factor right out of the box? Please back up your votes with a statement on why you feel the way you do.

How is that cheating? Poor game design I say! :D

Doom 3 is dependent on the 'jack-in-the-box monster' to scare you, hidden door opens to release monster on top of you or just around the darken corner.

Half-life bored me.

Now Sillent Hill is creepy!

Thief: Deadly Shadows

There is one level that takes place in a haunted ship full of zombies. Creepy. The zombies in Thief are very powerful, considering you're pretty weak overall.

There is another level later in the game that takes place in a haunted orphanage turned mental hospital. Aside from being very unnerving, it's also one of the best levels in the game. It actually involves seeing into the past while the hospital was in use to solve some of the puzzles.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.
- You are the creep. :)

Okay seriously:
Aliens vs Predator, playing as a human, playing late at night with the lights out of your room. That's some scary craziness. "What the f was that? Something moved over there! Where is it? Where the f did it go to? I got to get out of here!" :D

Oops... I forgot one. How many of you have played Clive Barker's Undying? Now THAT was one hell of a creepy game.
It was creepy for a bit, but after a (short) while, it really lost that aspect, and became really bland. I think the first time you leave the house was when it happened - creepy stuff just doesn't happen in the daytime on a bright, sunny day...

Doom 3 is definately more creepy than Half-Life 2. While Half-Life 2 features an incredible physics system and incredibly detailed characters, Doom 3 has a better light and shadow engine as well as interactive PDAs and computer consoles.

Doom 3 has a creepier atmosphere, but I'd say that Half-Life 2 is the better game out of the two (if your system has the horsepower to run it well, that is).

Doom 3 all the way. Sure, it got predictable, but for some reason, it really got under my skin.

I agree... I could play HL2 for hours on end but after playing D3 for a while my nerves are shot and I've got to give it up for a little while. I must be starting to suffer from old-man syndrome. :)

Thought I'd pop in to say Undying, but I've been beat to it... true, once you got closer to the ending the creep factor went down a lot, but as long as you were exploring the house... well, I'm a big cheater. I played with the walkthrough AND... -shame mode on- God mode -shame mode off.

And that mattered nothing, I STILL was scared down to the tips of my toes.

As for recent stuff (I quit FPSs, I'm just not good enough) I've heard Doom 3 is very creepy, yes...
