Battlemaps Lairs: Orc Sighting Tower

The company 0one Games has a reputation for quality map products. The old Orc Sighting Tower is one of their oldest and as I was going through my old files again, I figured, I’d mention this one.

Clocking in at fourteen electronic pages, the Orc Sighting Tower currently sells for $1.99. At this price, it’s hard to find deep flaws with the product.

The PDF has several bookmarks so navigation is a snap. The book starts off with a quick welcome that includes three different hooks to get the party into the tower. Visually, it moves onto an overview of the tower showing minimized versions of the ground level, first floor, and rooftop. A overhead view of the entire tower is also provided, a nice computer generated 3-D image.

The tower has two versions of each page to print, a full color version and a black and white version. Honestly, from printing a few pages in black and white that were color, and then printing the black and white version, I didn’t see that much of a difference. The black and white pages seem… wasteful and not particularly different. In addition, printing in black and white, in either verison, the page is far too busy and things become difficult to make out.

The file also has a nifty little empty box you can check. When doing so, it makes the level you’ve marked down empty. This removes all of the ‘clutter’ found on each level. This is a nice little touch but as maps have evolved, so has this function and I believe that other titles actually have more than just the ability to either make the room entirely empty or full.

The book even includes a starter villain, Pugt, a half-orc rogue who occupies the tower. While Pugt is written up in 3.5 game mechanics, his background is useful for any addition. More importantly, this product, the map, is useful for any game system that uses maps.

Ruined towers are long a stable of the fantasy environment and this one can have many uses. Wither it be holing up after running away from a horde of mindless undead, or preparing a siege to hold off humanoids, Orc Sighting Tower has potentially multiple uses.
