Battlestar Galatica Razor

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I like the Caine/Gina backstory, as well as the mini-revelation at the end. I am still not sure what the hybrid meant by it though.

As for Season 3, you can buy it in the states via Amazon Unbox, get all the downloads for cheap. I downloaded it to my PC, then used my XBox 360's media center connection to watch them on my 61" Samsung.

Sweeeeeeet. I just finished season 3 a few days ago.

The criticism that this special was no better than an iffy mid-season episode of BSG is, to be blunt, a pile of crap. I cannot see how any BSG fan can say that with a straight face. You are either stirring the pot - or you have been watching a very different series than I have.

I'm sorry but I think you to use an old adage, have drunk the proverbial cool aid when it comes to your devotion to the show. It was fine, was it stellar...no. Did Caine need more illumination...no. Can a legacy Hybrid with Original looking Cyclons change the nature of the show...sure wasnt written that way. All in all this was a throwaway movie...if you miss it then no harm when it comes to the series. My feeling overall was the show was empty calories.

I loved Lee as CO of the Pegasus, and wish the show had stuck to that premise of 2 Battlestars.

The more I think about it, the more I am disappointed. We left off last season with the shot of Earth and the rocking guitar chords and after months of hype we get a story that goes backwards, not just in time, but also retreading the philosophical ground of episodes that aired two years ago. Yes, Cain is a type A personality who was driven over the edge after the attack, shot her XO, cannibalized civilian ships, and tortured a prisoner. I know that already.

Almost all the Pegasus scenes, we already knew what was going to happen. We also knew that Shaw was going to die, or else she would have popped up in season 3. There wasn't a whole lot going on that really advanced the BSG story-other than one revelation thrown it at the end by the bizarre hybrid. The only new thing we found out about Cain was her relationship with Gina, an interesting revelation to be sure but their relationship wasn't developed beyond a kiss and a couple lines of dialogue.

Not only that, BSG is at its best when it's weaving mutiple stories together and using all its characters. Most of the BSG cast made little more than token appearances, and there was only one plot (if a rather windy one).

I still hold out hope that the DVD version will have a lot in it, and will give some life to the Cain and Shaw characters. I don't think what made it on to the screen was a disaster. I don't think it was poorly acted or shot, on the whole. My criticisms are mostly on the broad conceptual level. But I'd really rather that we had two more bona fide episodes of season 4 instead of this.

Incidentally, I also look forward to Ron Moore's DVD commentary. I suspect he would acknowledge these types of criticisms and would explain why they chose to do this project in the first place. He's always been very receptive to criticism from the fans.

They chose to do the project because NBC Universal said, "hey, we'd like to see a DVD of a standalone BSG story out there, you can shoot it between seasons," and Moore and Eick said "hells yeah!"

It purposefully doesn't advance the story. That's what the next season is for.

No kidding. (Though somewhat typical of a couple of... "overzealous"... BSG fans here at ENWorld.)

It wasn't that great. I also simply didn't "get it" (though I admit that's par for the course for me and much of BSG). While totally awesome, what was up with the old-school cylons? What was with that one weird/unique hybrid? Why was he more coherent than the others? What the heck was he talking about?

And why was everyone so surprised about the "human" cylons when it was clear that they were experimenting with body parts and organic materials?

I suspect what Husker found wasn't widely known among the population. Military secrets and such. And I don't know how they would make the leap to understanding that the cylons were trying to make human looking cylons. Most likely they though the cylons were torturing the people or trying to make some biologic weapon to be used against us.

Can't help out on the other questions, but...

Its been implied, and maybe even stated directly, that the 'old school cylons' were how they looked in the first war that the flashbacks occur in. We did see one of them and an old Raider in the Galactica during the mini-series for the museum display.

I think "Razor" added a little more depth to Cain and the Pegasus crew than that. Cain didn't just "go crazy". IMO, it was nice to see her as something more than the cardboard cutout we saw in BSG. Shaw was a bit of a throw away character, but I suppose they felt they needed to tell the story from the POV of someone more sympathetic than Cain, and a relative outsider as well.

Thanks! (Though actually, I did know that much. :heh: That old-style centurion in the museum was pretty neat...)

I was curious about the old-school cylons met by the Pegasus. What was the point of them? (Note that this is not necessarily the fault of the show, this is my personal bit of confusion.) For what audience benefit were they featured in Razor? I think they were supposed to be significant for some reason, but that was part of the story that was lost on me... :(
