bawylie's tutorial dungeon

Bawylie: I get why you have the acolyte cast sanctuary on the guard in room 2, as this makes it harder to move him out of the way. But I'm not really seeing the usefulness of casting it on either the bandit in room 4 or the guard in room 6, since neither of them is blocking the way, and they can't attack or else they'll lose the benefit of the spell.

Would you care to speak to your thinking behind that strategy?

Also, how would you change the acolytes' strategy were they to have access to 2nd level spells?

Combat isn't static. The sanctuary enables these dudes to have basically a round of doing something before being ganked by PCs, even if they lose initiative. It also reinforces prioritizing targets. (Choice, "drop the priest who's protecting his allies, or drop the ally before he can xyz?")

If they had access to 2nd level magic, I'd reserve it for stronger healing to reinforce that dilemma.

Like not getting one-shotted before they can attack or let a wolf out of a cage.

You'd really have to decide in that 1st round what your strategy would be.

Yeah. OK. That works for the bandit in the room with the kennel. I guess the guard in the last room could move towards the lion cage and then just hang there until it reckons it's time to let the beast free.
