Beast companion for my warden?

First Post
In a recent adventure, my warforged warden befriended a dire wolf. The dire wolf became his mount, and the DM essentially ruled him as a companion for the purposes of the rest of the adventure.

I know that my DM will be amenable to making the dire wolf a beast companion, but I want to stat him out as an actual beast companion like what a ranger or other classes would have -- so the wolf can level up with me --- but without causing an imbalance in the game mecanics.

As far as I know there are no beast companion rules for a warden. So, how would I integrate the beast companion rules into the warden class?

You could start by recreating your character as a Hybrid Warden Ranger... just to see how it looks "by the book." Then tweak.

Rather than change your class, you might see if the GM will let you work him out as a Companion character, from DMG2. Unless you wanted to have your attacks and such use the fact that your wolf buddy is around(in which case, yeah, see about hybridizing with ranger).

Off the top of my head, I'd make Beastmaster one of the 'Guardian Might' options. Tweak the powers that refer to "an enemy makes an attack that doesn't target you" to "that doesn't target you or your beast."

One of your At-Wills could pick up the Beast keyword; maybe Weight of the Earth.

Cheers,

The best suggestion I've seen. This puts it solidly in the not OP category, and gives the DM a bit of control.

As an aside, I love things like this. Things that add to the fun of a game, but not necessarily within the bounds set by the Rules as Written (or Word of God).
