beastly attributes

Do you add the ability score modifiers of a beast companion to its relevant defences/abilities?

It seems so, because otherwise whats the point of the beasts stats going up every few levels?

If it is true, are the companions modifiers already factored in to the level one stats?

It notes to add the str mod to damage, but nothing noted for the defences...

Or is it that the abilities are there only for ability skill checks, and AC for example is locked in at the prescribed rate regardless of the creatures dexterity?

AFAIK, you calculate the attacks and defenses of your Beast exactly as you would any other character, unless otherwise noted through a power/feature.

The beast's stats are exactly as presented, don't add attributes. the attributes are used for skill checks and ability checks, like any other monster.
That's how I read it, too.

Their Strength or Dexterity mod will influence their damage, and their attributes may influence some special effects, but their attacks and defenses are as-written. Note that they get +Level, rather than +(Level/2), so things will balance out a little bit. I'll need to see them in play to make a final call.
