Becoming a wizard mid-adventure

Grump,

Didn't say you were. I was just commenting (in general) that multiclassing shouldn't be hard unless you feel it's unreasonable. Like say a Blackguard becoming a paladin...That to me seems to stretch the imagination unless there's a lot of RP involved.
'Kay. I wasn't thinking in terms of 'reasonable' in this case, I was thinking in terms of 'let him be a wizard, and use it rather than fight it', since the OP seemed to rather against the idea of just 'letting' the PC multiclass - pointing out that it can be used to gently steer the adventure. :)

I thought that you might be assuming that I meant 'don't give him the spells he wants, give him the spells you want' when I meant 'give it some story.'

The Auld Grump, perhaps a might cranky tonight.

Grump,

We are all cranky right now. Myself especially with tinges of Abyssal ravagings in mind....

Human,

It's not that HUGE of a stretch compared to some other things I've seen. But yeah just let him do it. It won't kill anything. Sort of. ;)

I'm not against him becoming a wizard, I just think that if he wants to do it while in an adventure set in an isolated pocket plane then he has to accept that it's not like he's in a big city and can rock up to the nearest wizard's guild, lay down some cash, and walk away with a full spell book.

There is a spell book in the adventure, but it's not in the usual format, being instead contained on a crystal storage device. It's actually got a good selection os spells on it so I see no reason why, as long as they can work out the method of extracting the spell information, that can't be the basis for his spellbook. I like that better than "I had one in my pack all along" so I will probably go along that route.

In my own game, I don't let players multiclass unless there is some kind of internal logic behind it. It's generally a bit of a non-issue in my group, as most of us play single classed characters anyway.

While there might be no mechanical reason not to let Bubba the Barbarian up and become a Warmage in the middle of an epic adventure, it just seems inconsistent to me from a roleplaying POV. I am fully aware that some people may vehemently disagree with this.

Thur,

Not sure vehement is the word but certainly I see your point. That said, I don't see why Roguey the Rogue can't be Roguey the Wizard/Rogue.

We are currently running through the FR adventure the Twilight Tomb and some of the players have just gone from level 3 to 4. My brother is playing an Elvish Thief and now wants to take a wizard level.

I told him that he will have to either find some scrolls or spellbooks before he can cast spells but he's whining and saying that maybe I should just let him use "a spellbook that was an heirloom and he's been carrying it around in the bottom of his pack all along" (his words).

Now I can buy a guy having some strange dreams and waking up to find his latent sorcerous powers have emerged, but this is taking it a bit far...I run a fairly low-magic non-Monty Haul game and I prefer my solution, even if it will temporarily disadvantage the player...I can't envisage the problem taking more than a session to resolve itself given that the adventure is almost finished.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and come across a novel way to get around it?

That would depend upon what the concept he came up with you prior to playing the character. I started a Drow Ninja recently. Prior to this during character creation, we came up with concepts and character direction for leveling. It was meant to give the DM an idea of what we are going to do for character developement. We have some players who go with some wonky builds. My original idea of a build was ninja2/duskblade3/wiz2/AbjurChamp5/EK6/Drow2 since I'm playing aLA +0 Drow variant.

Instead I'm going with Ninja2/Beguiler6/swiftblade10/Drow2. The swiftblade is a new PrC on the web. It fits more in line with the original character concept. If your player commits to doing that and not wavering, then I wouldn't have a problem leveling up to a spellcasting class based on a written concept.
