D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

I meant in terms of not being a commercial success because of its similarity to 5e. I guess people including myself don’t penny pinch as much as I believe. I bought it despite the similarity and not initially being a fan of most of the changes.

Thus the initial reservations.

I mean why would you care about its commercial success? Obe way or another. WotC death ninjas cant take the books.

I view it as an investment into a continuing ecosystem. If it goes away quickly it was a poor investment. I like new content and options ever so often. 5e pace was about right, just a tad slow for me.

Are people really that sharp in their divide?

I mean, I'm running Out of the Abyss, the monsters are all 2014, with 2024 PHB and various other bits and not having any problems at all. I must be doing things wrong.
As long as there is something to be divided about, people will be divided. It's the very essence of humanity.

A friend of mine asserted that us humans are able to divide things into any two categories, even if we might not agree with how somebody else did the same division. His example was dividing things into witches and ice creams. I'm not sure I could refute it, even if I wanted to.

I mean, if you know it is spin, why would you trust it...

I don't trust it or distrust HASBRO's financial reports. I just don't see the point of assuming and proclaiming over and over and over again that it's all spin and they're hiding something especially when the only thing I see spin on has nothing to do with the actual books being produced.

I don't understand the relationship between these two statements. Is D&D doing okay or not? Is Hasbro spinning or not? They seem to be at odds.

These are financial reports which are held to certain legal standards. D&D is such a minor aspect of their business I see no reason for them to be deceptive about what's going on. I don't see any contradiction in what I've said ... we have no idea how well the game is selling. As long as people in my area want to play, and future development isn't being canceled I don't care.

I imagine folk that say it's hype/press numbers are having this discussion for the same reason as the folk that say it's not creative number-play: because such discussion and speculation is another way of engaging with the hobby.

Personally I have no doubt that the 2024 books are selling way better than the 2014 books.. the audience now is much, much larger than it was in 2014.
