Best 1st LVL Feat?

Queen_D's Toughness-on-Crack is certainly the best feat all around. :p
Can you also take that multiple times? A fighter with 10+ times that feat might be quite tough, indeed. :D

Hmm...

I'd say Cleave or Improved Trip.

Those are extremely potent feats at 1st level (tho you need to be a human or fighter or otherwise get a bonus feat).

But really, it so much depends on the concept, that naming a single feat is rather pointless. :)

I don't think there is a 'best' feat.

Part of this is because your 'best' feat will vary depending on your resources, your setting, your character, and GM approval.

For example, while I've been fortunate enough that my player's haven't heavily abused the regional feats in the Forgotten Realms or other sources (via Dragon Magazine), I know I've done my own tinkering. Same thing with Arcana Unearthed and it's Talents. If you want to be the best archer in AU, I can't see not taking Natural Archer at 1st level.

Some feats, like Improved Initiative are indeed useful for all classes, but characters have to weigh that utility against something that could have more impact on the game and their chances of survival.

and Weapon Finesse is not far behind.... even though the majority of the critters that have Weapon Finesse shouldn't .. as they didn't qualify at their first HD. ;)

Yes, I know. And the designers do, too. It was fixed - either in the errata or somewhere else. The critters now get it as a bonus feat for being a cuddly little animal, and so get something else as their 1st regular feat.
