Best Acting in a Fantasy/Sci-fi Movie

I agree with those who've mentioned LOTR, although I'd say it was Sean Astin who did some of the very best acting in those films, especially in ROTK. It's too bad no one from those films was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

William Hurt and Rufus Sewell in "Dark City", a highly underrated film IMHO.

Judith Vitette (Miette) in "City of Lost Children", another underrated movie.

Haley Joel Osment in "AI". It's a flawed movie, but his performance was great.

I would have said Paxton - he's brilliant - only I couldn't remember his name. :)

"Sir, is this going to be a stand up fight or just another bughunt?"

"We've got nukes, we've got knives, we've got sharp sticks. You can fry half a city with this baby."

It's not just Bill Paxton or Sigourney Weaver who does great acting in Aliens. The entire cast and the characters are the BEST YET TO COME.

"Game over, man. Fargin game over."

Seeing this made my day. Jennifer Connely and Keifer Sutherland were excellent as well.

Ah, so nice to meet another fan! Most people I talk to have never heard of it. And I agree about Kiefer Sutherland's performance. :)

Connely was excellent in a different way. ;) Those were the days before she acquired the emaciated hollywood actress look.

Yeah, Dark City is a favorite of mine, too, but I gotta say, the most compelling acting is really from the aliens. Especially Richard O'Brien / Mr. Hand (who Rocky Horror fans may recognize as Riff Raff.)

A truly superlative film! As was "Delicatessen" :)

Someday I have *got* to see that!

Re: 'City of Lost Children', isn't it scary that a 10-year-old child can put in such a wonderful performance? She could out-act almost the entirety of Hollywood's 'top ten'. I remember thinking the same thing about Kirsten Dunst in 'Interview with the Vampire'. Too bad she's been sucked into the typical Hollywood acting standard as she gets older.
