Best and Worst Settings?

Don't worry Chris. I don't judge a campaign setting by it's predecessor books. I'm sure DL3e will come out flying.

*And if not, well hey, not my fault! ;) *

See, this completely contradicts your signature... so, nostalgia doesn't help score points whether a good game is a good game, but it does determine whether a bad game is a bad game...?

Touche. I'm not afraid to admit that my prior experiences color my view... and the likelihood that I would enjoy the session. I think that most people for whom this is not true are in denail.

That said, even if the DL adventure series never happened, DL would still have Kender. :)

THAT said, it's not like that would play much of a role if I was actually reviewing a DL product. I'm sure I would grade it on what was actually there. And I liked your adventure, so I'm sure you could do good stuff.

But why, oh why, did it have to be Dragonlance? :)

Really that statement is in direct reaction to some heat I took for daring to criticize Rob Kuntz' adventures for NG, and one raving fanboy labelled me biased against "1e feel", which is total poppycock because there are some NG books I adore... just not the ones written by Kuntz, which are bad.

Fair enough. ;)

It's Dragonlance because I was hired to work for Sovereign Press... I was hired to work for Sovereign Press because of my adventures... I started writing adventures because of Ravenloft... I got into Ravenloft because Dragonlance had gotten me into gaming because of the novels... ;-) Circular fate, if you will.

Dragonlance isn't for everyone, but I do hope that the new edition will really help Dragonlance shine!

Best Settings:

the world of shadowrun -- low fantasy meets high tech, with some amazing metaplots that drive the entire game forward. Pick a year between 2050 and 2063 to play in, and there's so much going on all over the place, it's just amazing.

Dark*Matter: I didn't like Alternity's space opera trappings in StarDrive, but when I cracked the cover of D*M, I was hooked. I'm working to bring this into a d20 modern game.

The Weird West: I really liked the world of Deadlands. Didn't like the system too much, nor its d20 incarnation.

Worst Settings:

Greyhawk: Boring. It's peak was before my time as a gamer. I can't conceive of it as anything but a 1st Edition world.

Forgotten Realms, 2E: I got really sick of all the real-world parallels brought to the world: The Horde, Maztica, Marco Volo. A little more orignality would have been nice. I haven't read the 3E stuff yet, and can't stand the novels, but I hope it's taken a turn for the better. I really loved the 1E boxed set, and the "core" FR products from 2E. I just hope they don't announce a gold rush and turn Icewind dale into Jack London's Alaska or drop a wild west setting onto the Maztican continent somewhere.

Ravenloft: Blah. When I want gothic horror, D&D is not what comes to mind. This product line really overextended itself.

No Opinions:

dark sun: I've got a few of the products, never read them. Kinda liked the concept.

Planescape: loved the computer game, never read the game product. Don't own any of it.

Kalamar: waiting to receive the campaign book I ordered to see if this is going to be the home of my next campaign, or if I'll end up using...

Mystara: Very interested in the feel of this world after I cracked open the boxed set I got for $5 at Kay-Bee toys about 5 years ago. Was looking through my stuff to figure out where to set my next D&D campaign (homebrew bored me).

Best setting: GURPS IOU - Phil Foglio art, fastastic possibilities, great humor, it's the single best setting I've ever read, or run, or played in by far.

Best D&D Setting: Planescape, closely followed by Oathbound

Worst: Not going to get into that...

Worst Setting: The setting of Cyberpunk 2020. It's an absolute mish-mash of the worst parts of the cyberpunk genre, with little originality or character.

I actually really liked Cyberpunk 2020, but the DM had modified the setting, making it more anime inspired(never before have I fought a combat Boomer with a monomolecular katana and a submachine gun. Hopefully, I never will).

Best: Homebrews. I love homebrewing my own setting(which doesn't even have a proper name yet, as they haven't gone extraplanar yet).

Runner-Up: Scarred Lands. I get more inspiration from this setting than from any other.

Worst Setting: Dungeonworld. I had the displeasure of playing a game of this last night with a few friends(somebody else ran). I had my character coup de grace himself.

Best:: Forgotten Realms and its sisters Zhakara, Al Quadim, Kara Tur- all of them BAD ASS way better done than any other out there, forget the swordcoast GO EAST.
-
Best Concept:: Dark Sun and Planescape.
Both have had some negative sides too, but the good ones made them shine.
.
Worst:: Most homebrew stuff stinks. Dragonlace and Greyhawk are both terrible. Dragonlance is worst.

I think homebrew is a matter of taste. Some people love homebrews(and homebrewing), some people hate em.

Although I'll agree with you, Dragonlace is horrible.

Where were the dice? I mean, come on...what gamer do you know wants to show up at a table without their bag/jar/bucket of dice... particularly the cool new set that they just bought and if you touch it you will find yourself missing a hand?

I am struck by the inherent delusion most gamers have about thier dice.

Most people say the love the random nature of using dice, yet the inherent mechanics of using dice in system where you "advance" and get better in skills and attack rolls means the random nature of the dice becomes less significant over time. So the biggest paradox in the argument would be a fellow who wants to "random" dice and yet brags about his high level characters.

In truth, dice are a prop that provides a tatctile sensation and in a way, rpgs allow people to "gamble" with the PCs ... in a fixed match. :)
