Best and Worst Settings?

That I've played

Best setting: Forgotten Realms 1st Edition style

Worst setting: Dragonlance, hated it then, hate the 3E version of it in advance.

Favorite setting: Currently running a Kingdoms of Kalamar campaign and loving it.

Best Overall Concept - Dark Sun. I mean, c'mon. Imagine a world that was once lush with vegetation, but suffered a series of genocidal wars directed by a mad wizard (later overthrown and imprisoned by his own generals), which turned the planet into a barren, blasted desert. Now, resources such as water, wood, and metal (especially iron) are extremely rare, and the few centres of life and commerce on the planet are a series of city-states ruled by Sorcerer-Kings who wield godlike power. Life is often dangerous, brutish, and short and the only equalizer is the fact that everybody possesses psionic power to some degree. Plus, all the halflings are savage cannibals. How can you beat that?! :D

Best New Concept - Iron Kingdoms, because steam-punk + fantasy = Really Cool Campaign Setting.

Best Overall Setting - Homebrew, because you can tailor-make it to be whatever you want it to be. Personally, though, I prefer to run in FR (for that high-magic feel) or Scarred Lands (for a more gritty feel).

Worst Overall Setting - World of Synnibar. :D

Worst D&D Setting - Dragonlance. The events of the novels were so huge and world-shattering, it felt like the PC's just couldn't make any kind of difference. Alot of people accuse FR of the same thing, but Faerun is Big , with plenty of places where your characters can shine. To me, Ansalon seemed very small so it was difficult to do anything without running into the shadows of the Heroes of the Lance. The fact that it had Kender, Gully Dwarves, and Tinker Gnomes was just adding insult to injury.

Of course, I'm anxious to see how the new d20 Dragonlance setting gets treated.

For me Planescape and Scarred Lands are really good.
Shame I never played in Dark Sun.
I really like that kind of settings.

As for thre worst:

Worst Setting: Das Schwarze Auge. A German campaign/system that makes me wish Eric's grandma wouldn't check on this place. Imagine every RPG and Fantasy clichee you can think off wrapped up in one setting. Then you get Das Schwarze Auge... [/B]
It was called "L'Oeil Noir" in French but I think it's the same game.
And I have to totally agree with Lars.

Damnit, you beat me to it!

Best setting/game for me? Torg. The possibility wars, if you'll pardon the pun, had infinite possibility for roleplaying and great dramatic storytelling.

It doesn't hurt that I had an author of one of the splat books for the system as my GM, but still...

Best and worst

Okay, I'll do this in two parts.

1. Non D&D/d20

Favorite setting: Warhammer FRP. Dark, gritty, funny at times, melds Call of Cthulhu-atmosphere with fantasy, and does it well.

Least favorite setting: Cyborg Commando. All I remember is that I didn't like it. At all.

2. D&D/d20

Favorite setting: Planescape. Or if limited to "active" settings, Ravenloft. Planescape is all weird, and I like that. Ravenloft is gothic horror at it's best for me.

Least favorite setting: The Foundation (that supers game someone mentioned above).

Last thoughts: the problem though is that there are so many good or even brilliant settings, that just picking one is impossible, I mean the Cthulhu-mythos, the Delta Green sub-setting, DarkMatter, Cyberpunk 2020, Star Wars, Mystara, Scarred Lands, GammaWorld, Castle Falkenstein, Glorantha, Nyambe, Rokugan, Dark Sun, Space 1889, James Bond, Discworld... the list goes on and on.

Cheers

Maggan

I like a lot of stuff -- Planescape would have to be my favorite, right up there with Forgotten Realms (particularly Realms Underdark). I've played and enjoyed Birthright.

Settings I think I could live without: Dragonlance. Greyhawk ... I'm thinking "meh... either way."

Settings I own but haven't played (and should at least once): Dark Sun, Scarred Lands.

Settings I don't own but want to play: Nyambe.
