Best creature for the Wendigo template?

Looking for the best creature for a good "shock and awe" encounter in and around the ECL of 12-16 (including the +2 CR the template gives) to slap the Wendigo template onto. I own Fiend Folio, MMI, MMII, MMIII, all the Forgotten Realms books, Libris Mortis and Frostburn.

The encounter will be in a deep forested area.

Fiend folio. They are fey that haunt the deep forest and cold regions. They have a poisonous bite and its maddening whispers ability does wisdom damage.

Unfortunately I do not. However the encounter is somewhat Lovecraftian in nature. It's dark, they hear voices, things out of the corner of their eye they just can't put a finger on. Then Wham-O. The Wham-O part is where I'm having the trouble.

Come to think of it, I think that CR would be higher than what you're looking for anyway. Hmmm... I'll have to give it a bit more thought...

I suggest Ogre. Slap some barbarian levels on top for taste.

You'd need a lot of barbarian levels to get into the 12-16 CR range. Hey, howsabout a pseudonatural troll wendigo? The non-epic kind?
