Best creature for the Wendigo template?

What book is psuedonatural from? Cuz that sounds just creepy. :)
It's one of those templates that has appeared in all kinds of books. One of those official monster books has it; I think FF, although it might be MM2, I believe as well. There's a steroided version of the template in the Epic Level Handbook too, and Tome & Blood is the original printing of it.

Human, perhaps elf, and anything significantly different from that really rubs raw with some of the original stories and legends about the Wendigo. Read the Algernon Blackwood story 'The Wendigo for a classic look at the modern version of the myth. I can't say how much Blackwood's tale (which forms the basis for the WotC critter) relates to the original canadian native legends entirely.

The template describes humanoids, giants, animals, magical beasts, and monstrous humanoids.

A classed humanoid creature gives you lots of variety, but perhaps the second time they face somehting, you could go with someting a bit nastier like a medusa.

I would go with mainly Humanoid creatures, as that's more appropriate to the original legends. However many scholars do try to compare the Wendigo with the Sasquatch and Yeti. So applying the template to the Yeti, would seem strangely appropiate....

A hag, of course. Black Annis (CR6), to be specific.

Why?
Maddening whispers, fog cloud Annis ability, terrifying combat ability.

Add 5 levels of Druid (for harassing spells, animal companion, wildshape ability)... "I though I heard someone speaking, but all I saw was a crow, perched in a withered tree."

Add 1 level of a rogue (sneak for additional damage, improved stealth abilities).

Total CR: 12 + 2 (Wendigo) = 14.

Remember to add some magic items capable of either turning the hag ethereal or foiling detection spells. A scroll or a ring with two or three Dispel Magic, Greater... and a few pet Stick Golems.

Regards,
Ruemere

PS. I guess my inspiration is obvious. In order to increase sheer deadliness of the encounter (or to scare the players more), add a few natural hazards, like colonies of slimes and oozes.
