D&D General Best edition for DnD lore

Legend
I fondly look back to 1e Forgotten realms books like Waterdeep and the North and Under Illefarn as great books that had plenty of lore to get me a few campaigns out of and allowed me to play for a long time.

I must say that 4e always felt like the lore was fresh and new. My group even began to use those gods instead of the FR ones. I also think that Piazo writing Dungeon and Dragon magazines added a lot to this.

Any book recommendations?
The Monstrous Manual, for one. Any of the Van Richten Guides for Ravenloft. Virtuality every product in the Planescape setting, starting with the Planes of X boxed sets and the Factol's Manifesto. The various god-books of the Realms (Faith's and Avatars, etc) mentioned above. Sovereign Press's Legend of the Twins for 3e Dragonlance.

I could go on.

2e the 'setting bloat' that sunk the ship also gave us the most fluff to pick and choose. 1e stuff was great but 2e did a bunch of it better, 3e did add some but mostly updated 2e/1e fluff and the 4e changes gave some good options.
