Eh, nevermind.

I barely see Jacob's Ladder as a horror film. It didn't scare me at all. That list is weirdly random.

I can certainly see how people would have different reactions to it, and I can also see how someone might categorize it differently. When I first saw it, it scared the living daylights out of me. And still does when I watch it. Especially that subway scene. But even just the idea of it,
of being dead and not knowing
, freaks me out (that is why I mentioned Carnival of Souls as well). Not sure the spoiler tag is needed on this one, as I remember they even gave away the premise in the trailer (I believe)

I agree the list is a bit random

I'm wondering if it's because I was raised in a completely non-religious environment, so I just don't feel the underlying premise of the film. For whatever reason, the film just doesn't affect me. I've also never much cared for Tim Robbins' acting, so I'm clearly not the target audience. It just never occurred to me that it could be considered a horror film, but it's been mentioned by several folks in this discussion, so there you go. Horror casts a wide net!

It is hard to say. I do know people raised without religion who found it scary, and it is ultimately more psychological (and I think the religious ideas are actually based on an old heresy, but I could be wrong about that). I was raised quite religious and I am sure that made the idea
of being in purgatory
(which is how I read it) very appealing (
I like the way it moves from seeming to be hell, then seeming to be more like purgatory
).

What's your opinion of The Sixth Sense?

I think that the trope of (REMOVED) from Jacob's Ladder is actually so common in media, that there is a long-running podcast (How Did This Get Made) that refers to the trope when they see it as Jacob's Ladder.

Honestly, it's so common now that whenever I see something that isn't quite making (Sixth) Sense, I say to myself, "Self, is this a Jacob's Ladder?"

It's definitely a common trope, to the extent that I realised what Sixth Sense twist was during the opening scene.

What's your opinion of The Sixth Sense?

I just saw it again recently so my opinion is fresh. It is a good movie. It has some quirky elements to it that don't make it bad, but aren't quite my cup of tea. That said I get why it is a classic. I think it is a good horror film for a general audience, and I was genuinely surprised by the twist when I first saw it (and I think on rewatch the elements leading up the twist are well done). His subsequent films maybe cast Sixth Sense in a different light, but I can watch it without thinking about The Village. Did I find it scary? Not really. I think the part where the girl vomitted in the tent, spooked me a bit the first time I saw it. It is definitely a tamer horror movie. However I think the part of it that is a bit scary is it is one of those movies that really reminds you of your own mortality. So on that front, similar to Jacob's Ladder, it is unnerving. I would say Sixth Sense is a solid film for Halloween season (I think Halloween lends itself to lighter, campier or just not as intense horror)
