Best magic item to take into the Underdark?

Kai Lord

Hero
Hi fellas,

I just created a 1st level drow cleric of Eilistraee who will be journeying into the Underdark with several other devout Eilistraeens to convert evil drow (or kill them).

I'm pretty happy with my character so far but noticed that ECL +2 characters get to start with 2700 gp worth of magic items. What do you think would be the most useful way I could spend the money? I've narrowed down what I think would be the best items to:

Heward's Handy Haversack - 2000 gp
Cloak of Elvenkind - 2000 gp
Boots of Striding and Springing - 2500 gp
Bag of Holding - 2500 gp
Hat of Disguise (possibly more useful on the surface) - 2000 gp
Boots of Elvenkind - 2000 gp
Ring of Jumping - 2000 gp
Wand of Charm Person (he has the "Charm" domain) - 750 gp

Which would you choose?

EDIT: Removed weapons/armor with special abilities that he couldn't afford and added a couple more items.

Longsword has to be +1 enchanted to put Keen enchantment on it - way past 2700 gp

I think the same is with Mithral chain shirt.

Best objects in my opinion are Bag of holding and Boots of striding and springing.
I would probably take boots.

Really? I thought you could enchant a masterwork item with Keen or any other special ability. I'll have to check on that....

EDIT: Yep, you're right. For the armor as well. Guess that rules those out.

Yes, the Boots are quite tempting.

You have to have at least a +1 enhancement bonus in weapons & armors in order to take the special properties to them.

Btw. Hasn't the boots of striding & springing price been raised in the errata.

Take a dull grey iuon stone with continual flame cast on it. Hands-free torch.

You can get a mithral shirt with no magic. However the Boots of Striding and springing have been erattaed up to 6,000 gp.

My personal favorite is slippers of spider climbing.

I think drows have darkvision, so you don't need everburning torch!

Then you can choose just between few items.
Muy suggestions from your list are Haversack or bag.

Perhaps you can also read prices for prayer beads. I hope I have right, because I type without books.

What about full plate + MW weapon + buckler.

In the underdak is food/water rare. I would sugest a Travelers Cloak (prot cold 5, food/water, and more goodie stuff) for 1200 gp. Or a ring of sustance of 2500 gp. All other items will enhance your abilities but not improve the chances you survive.

If you want something that enhances your chances, then I would go for the cloak of elven kind.
