Best Mapping program

Have any of you guys checked out the mapping script at Pyromancers.com | Online Dungeon Painter & RPG Forum Scene Viewer - solutions for comfortoble online playing It's extremely ease to use and provides just about everything you'd need to make an effective map. My only delimma is that it only works if you have an internet connection. Does any of you guys know of anything remotely close to what were seeing here that can be used offline via software?

Well I can't get your link to work, so I can't judge just what this online application can do to compare to other means of creating maps. I am a professional RPG cartographer, so I have many suggestions on what software applications might be best. I could never agree that there's one software that is best for everyone. People approach map creation differently, some find image editors (and pyromancer's seem to be that kind of application - of course I don't really know, not being able to see the linked page).

I find vector applications fast and easy (and capable of doing everything I need in a map), but only if you're using one with powerful secondary features such as beveling and shadowing. I use Xara Designer Pro, a vector drawing app as my preferred application of choice, but I'm kind of alone in using it.

I'm sure there is one best software for each individual mapper, but I doubt there's actually one software best for everyone. Everyone is different.

Check the Cartographers' Guild, listed are most all mapping applications available, and many with tutorials, so I'd check there first to find something comparable.

Interesting. The link works on my end. I don't think it's the best by any means, it was merrily a bias choice of words to catch peoples attention. It really is awesome though. It basically throughs a grid on a large scale for you, and has several tools that snap to the edges of the grid that really brings together a nice looking map.

Eh, lots and lots of software can do that easily, snap to grid and grid placement are very common features in most graphics applications and mapping programs.

Here's a link to my Map thread in the Media Lounge forum here at Enworld. Although I have many different styles of maps, all of them were created primarily using Xara Designer Pro - I've already got my best tool (and yes, it has snap-to-grid, grid placement, and much, much more.)

Pymapper is pretty similar I think and should be usable offline.
