Best mechanic for handling equipment

What is the best mechanic that you know of in a rpg for handling equipment besides just using money? I need something i can integrate with a level based system of different tech levels.

For example I was thinking of setting up some sort of mech points system for vehicles but one that uses Level Adjustment instead of just another Feat.

That way I could balance characters in a game like Rifts that has Mech pilots in the same setting as lower tech characters and magic users.

For such situations, I typically look to games that control character power in different manners than levels.

CHAMPIONS and Mutants and Masterminds are my to go-to games right now for character balance across genre/tech divide.

There is a 4e/Pathfinder setting publisher doing something similar I think -- Dias Ex Machina. I've glanced at the periodic developer updates, but don't own the product so can't comment on how well their mechanics work.

yes but I already have a level based game. I'm looking for a way to create a reasonable balance with levels without getting too complicated.
