Best MMORPG Out There?

Most MMOs now have some form of free trial. That may or may not have limited functionality; LotRO's did when I tried that, but that was a while back.

But definitely shop around, what you may not think is a good fit for you based on what you hear may well be your perfect game. After all, most people have negative opinions of games they haven't played. You remember negative comments more than positive ones, and after a while the negative comments all pile on each other. After a while, the "Aion/L2/FFXI are super-grindy" and "AoC is 'mature' because it has boobies" comments add up.

I personally greatly enjoy WoW. It's well-supported, very popular, and doesn't believe in punishing the player for choosing to play the game. It certainly didn't hurt that a lot of my friends played it. I actually got pulled into it by having one of those friends show me his character.

I tried Champions Online when several friends started with that, but was irritated by the "character builder that can build anything you want" can't actually build everything I wanted; seriously, is it too hard to include a dinosaur or dragon head? Really? That, plus that it stressed my system, led me to drop it.

Getting back to the popular...a large portion of your experience is going to be social. If you join a game where you don't know anyone, it probably won't be as fun as it would if you do know someone there.

Thanks for the replies. Looked at several now and I'll admit to being seduced by some of the slick upcoming titles like FFIV. I will not allow this to let me overlook gameplay, but it's looking increasingly likely the youngster will have to go to work, while I concentrate on important stuff like playing some of these stunning games

If you're into RP, and you liked CO but want something a little better, I've got my eye on DC Universe Online. SWTOR has been mentioned but it's a mid-late 2011 release at best.

Personally though, I enjoy Guild Wars, and recommend Guild Wars 2. They're doing some nice things with the game, such as weakening the reliance on the "holy trinity", it's F2P fro the getgo with no microtrans, and it's got an inverse leveling curve(ie: xp from level to level plateaus instead of continually increasing exponentially).

I'm partial to City of Heroes. It's the only game I paid for for more than a year of gaming, and the one I would go back to in a heartbeat if I could justify the expense (time and money) for MMOs.

Thanks for the help :) Got finished for now and going to go back to the topic when DC Universe, Guild Wars and SWTOR appear. Alongside likely Neverwinter Nights and a possible EA title, next year is going to be the time for choosing MMORPGs.

Apart from Eve, which is awesome for anyone with a spare life to hand.
