Best Modern Game System

What I would like to see in a modern game system is the following:
- tailorability of characters (unique characters -- such as through the use of edges/feats/advantages/classes/achetypes
- a comprehensive skill list
- realistic-as-possible firearms rules
- balanced character health system -- can take a few hits without dying, yet the fear of being shot is always a concern.
- a balance between simple and complex rules. (ie: Savage Worlds setting is a little too simple of a ruleset for us).

Shadowrun 4th Edition has everything from that list, except hyper-realistic firearms rules, but you won't find those anywhere, anyways. Well, maybe in Phoenix Command. The Shadowrun firearms rules work very well, though.

hmm, where can i find one myself?
I don't know, she came to me.

On topic: I have spycraft 1.0, while it is good for the superspy genre, I wouldn't suggest it for anything else. I don't know much about 2.0, but I have heard good things.

2.0 is much, much, much more a Modern action system. Worth picking up for ideas like Campaign Qualities, the NPC generation system and mission generation alone, if nothing else. And if you don't like the classes, there's Back to Basics, mentioned earlier in the thread.

Based on the complimentary review I was treated to (thanks TheLe), here would be my quick summary.

Kor, thank you for the summary.

Btw, Kor happens to be the name of one of the deities in my homebrew setting.

As I've opined elsewhere, the 2.0 revision took Spycraft from my espionage and military game of choice to my overall modern action game of choice.

I don't have any problems seeing a cheerleader class in an MiB style campaign, it seems to me like it would fit right in.

I'm running a Bureau 13 campaign and I would have zero problems working in cheerleaders or goths as heroes or villains. In fact I think both are excellent ideas.

Agreed. Not sure how I feel about them being character classes though.

I'd say that d20 Modern is the bestest system for cinematic Action Adventure role-playing. If you want to be able to do stuff from the movies, then this is it.

However, if you want something with a higher does of realism, then the latest version of GURPS is probably the way to go. GURPS 4e is a great system.

True20's got my vote. SC 2.0 is a fantastic rules setting, but you do indeed need a spine of steel to dive in and tweak it to what you want. M&M has an interesting "agents" supplement coming out soon, focusing on low-power PCs in the M&M world.

The day somebody grinds out the classless/point-buy version of True20, we all go home happy.
