Best OD&D system?

Out of curiosity, aren't Labyrinth Lord and Swords & Wizardry both rule sets that try to recreate OD&D? If so, what are the substantive differences between them (e.g. which does it better)? What about GORE (the Generic Old-school Roleplaying Engine)? Are there any which try to recreate BD&D (that is, what's in BECMI and the Rules Cyclopedia, as opposed to Supplements I-IV)?

On a separate note, when will we see a rule set that clones 2E? :p

My vote for what you're describing would be Labyrinth Lord. If you'd like to try something that keeps the OD&D simplicity, but is a tad bit updated, I would recommend you take a look at Castles & Crusades (they even have a free quick start pdf on their website). I was/am a diehard 1E/0E fan, but C&C won me over.

Actually Labyrinth Lord doesn't try to recreate OD&D, but rather B/X Moldvay BD&D. Check it out for free at Goblinoid Games

I have the PDF, I just don't have the old-school versions of D&D, so I'm not sure what's a clone of what, specifically (save that OSRIC clones 1E). Thanks for clearing that up about Labyrinth Lord though.

EDIT: How is LL distinctly B/X, as opposed to BECMI, in what it presents? I'm just curious.

Labyrinth Lord certainly has the most impressive layout, though it's a llittle light on classes.

I wish some professional games company's had Daniel Proctor's layout skills. I recently got StarSIEGE, which seems like a good game but the layout is a real pain - and no Contents page to help.

It's the one true game. All others are just pale imitations of the real thing. :p
Right, just like Home Sapien was a "pale imitation" of Cro Magnon ... ;)

See the sig baby! It's all about the Apex of Evolution!

And not at all like these modern, "civilized" games, with their weak doughy muscles and soft hands, untested by battle and adversity. Rawr!!

No, I have no idea what that was supposed to mean ...
