Best online store for mini's?

Gamerocket.net has the best prices I've seen so far. You can get non-rare huges for 5 or 6 bucks. You can get some rares for 10 dollars or less. They are a bit slow with the shipping, however and tend to run out of stock of the more popular miniatures rather quickly.

Auggies Games on E-bay. Best store out there.

Absolutely agree. You can find him here.

He routinely has the best prices, as well as a flat-rate shipping ($3.50 regardless of how much you're buying). He's also a friendly guy, and responds to e-mails with questions very quickly.

I just checked them out, and those are pretty bad prices compared to Auggies. Every rare I saw was at least 2-5 dollars over what he charges.

I think for pre-painted minis, you're either going with WotC stuff or HeroClix, although I don't know how close they are to the same scale.

Heroclix are noticably larger, I'd guess they are more along the lines of a 35mm to the 28mm scale. The bases are an issue as well, not being 1 inch for medium creatures.

Pre-painted plastic minis ain't cheap to produce, unfortunately. Learn to love unpainted metal, that's what I say! :)

Generally, metal minis are significantly more expensive than the plastic variety (20 cents for a generic orc vs. 3.00 for a metal one), and are more of a pain to transport (and store). I find myself using my metal painted minis less simply because its so much more convenient to toss the plastic monsters we'll need for the day in a ziploc freezer bag and not have to worry about paint chipping, minis breaking etc. I still have a small case for the metal PC minis though.

In addition to using the D&D painted plastics, I "comb" ebay for deals on MageKnight minis. Some of them are very good. I've gotten some real good minis that would have cost a lot with lead or plastic for very cheap. Go to WizKids website and you can see the pictures, then search in ebay under that miniatures name.

I use a "widget" to scrape them off the base and then glue them to a new normal base (whatever kind floats your boat). I use whatever plastic bases I have in my "extra parts" box and I also buy wooden 1" or 2" discs from hobbie shops like Michaels, etc. Usually you can get 10 wooden discs for a buck or two.

You can also use the dreamblade miniatures. Some of the commons and uncommons are very cheap on ebay and you get some great miniatures. Take alook at the Ogre. I think I picked up a few for only $1.00 each, scraped them off the base and re-based them. For under $5.00 I now have a handful of Ogres, with fair paint jobs, ready for use. Try getting 3 lead Ogres for that price. Hope this helps.

Are these [mageknight] about the same scale as the D&D ones? How difficult is it to remove them from the bases? This might be a great way to get mooks on the cheap.

I am not really into painting the mini's just don't ahve the time and what I saw from the WotC ones the paint was more than acceptable for my use. Not a nice as some really great custom jobs but decent for the game.

btw the website is http://www.wizkidsgames.com/wk_home.asp

I have a confession to make. I despise painting miniatures. I always have.

Does that make me a bad gamer?

The popularity of pre-painted minis would indicate that makes you the average gamer.

Coming out and just saying so though simply slots you as overly honest and unwise :)

Far cheaper than metal though!
It was my understanding the molds to produce plastic miniatures were much more expensive, which is why there are relatively few companies making them, as compared to the large number of even small outfits making metal miniatures.

You have to cut them off, then rebase them. Not worth it IMO considering their price is on par with wotc's D&D minis, their scale is noticably off, and (imo) they look goofy and tend to have poor production paint jobs. Unless you can get them for REALLY cheap, its hard to compete with the 20-50 cents a good online store charges for mooks.
