We''ll make great pets

Back in a 2E campaign we had an NPC cleric to tag along. Hans Nieberlunger had an intelligence of 3. Ironically, he possessed/was possessed by an intelligent 3 headed flail named Krenkald. Krenkald made all the decisions, was a sound tactician and was a fervent foe of chaos. Hans was relegated to being a pack mule who could heal. He made a great pet tho.

My now retired Living Greyhawk character, Grimslade the Thrice Damned had a decent pet. Grim was a Shadowdancer and his shadow companion was the shade of a gnome, Grubber. While planar gate hopping in an adventure, Grim and the party wound up in the Abyss confronted by a servant of Orcus. The specter was way out of our league but he seemed personable. Safe passage back to our lovely Prime Material only required one soul, represented by a humanoid heart. We had recovered the corpses of some Seekers including Grubber. Grim offered up the gnomes heart and lived to fight another day. The Specter was so pleased Grim received a Blessing of Orcus, detected as mildly evil and got social bonuses with evil outsiders/ penalties with good. When the time came many levels later to call a shadow companion, Grubber answered the call. A prankster in life, he now is a disgusting and disturbing shade who constantly tempts Grim to do evil and follow Orcus. His chest and ribcage are torn open to constantly remind Grimslade of his transgression.

My gnome anima mage had a "pet" dominated 10th-level kobold ninja for a while.

He also has a skeletal rast which he flies around on ('cuz skeletal creatures keep their magical flight ability; this trick also works with nightmares, so you can have a wicked cool flying horse skeleton).

And he frequently binds the vestige Malphas, which gives him the ability to conjure a raven or dove that he can control and remotely view through. The other players thought it was his familiar, and were surprised when I purposely used my "familiar" to set off traps.
